I'm not at all surprised Pat - Tokyo is under a state of emergency with Covid. A lot of people in Japan, from what I read, would prefer the Olympics didn't happen at all but there's huge money now invested, to say nothing of the training and dedication shown by the athletes involved...

... A very tough one all round.

Isn't this sad but understandable 😪😪.

Feel sorry for all the athletes who've trained so hard to compete in the Olympics and now will do so without the vocal support of the spectators.

TOKYO, July 8 (Reuters) - Organisers of the Tokyo Olympics have agreed to hold the event without spectators under a COVID-19 state of emergency, Japan's Olympics Minister Tamayo Marukawa said on Thursday.

Yeah Pat, franol that was them ok. Active ingredient was ephedrine. If you took one of them bad boys washed down with a couple of Solpadeine you were good to go !

I also remember Tony smoked like a trooper, like a chain smoker nearly !!! Was gas really. We had a few good days in Schveningen, in between the work...

Wow, that sounds like the same Tony alright.

The tablets I had for asthma were Franol and only had them in the early 70's. There were no sprays or tablets available to me during the 60's.

Good stuff Pat. Well, I didn't know any of Tony's family at all but he definitely had pretty serious asthma. I remember years ago the two of us were over in The Hague (Scheveningen) with work, and Tony's asthma started playing up. His inhalers weren't really doing it so I gave him a tablet or two of my meds for asthma - which contained ephedrine! They were taken off the market since! Ephedrine is one of the amphetamine (speed) family, as you probably know! Anyway, the tablet duly sorted Tony's asthma while blowing his head off (cos he wasn't used to them!!!)

So maybe the same guy Pat, a sound lad and a gentleman as I said earlier.

I first thought hockey was a pussy game. No contact. Whistle blowing all the time. I played tennis a lot but behind me was the hockey pitch.

So watched a few games. Changed my mind. Seriously fit and active game.

And then there was inter department games and I joined as goalkeeper.

Bla dee bla career took off.

Now Tony Corcoran may be a long lost neighbour of mine.

In the 6o's a Corcoran family lived in Celtic Park Avenue but moved to Drumcondra we thought near that road to the right of Fagans.

Jaysus, the Corcoran's were the first place I saw telly.

There was Tony, Ciaran, Michael if memory serves me correctly.

Wonder if it's the same family.

One of the boys had serious asthma like me.

Very interesting post Pat, I think you're correct in the way the opposition should be regarded, at least for the duration of the game.

Hockey, hmmmmm. A really nice, sound guy that I worked with was big into hockey and played it. Dunno what position. Tony Corcoran, lived in Drumcondra and drank sometimes in Bertie's pub - Fagan's. Wonder did you know him ?

I played hockey for Aer Lingus.

Was a goalkeeper.

Great position to play in. All padded out and ready for action.

I used to gee up my defence. Curse, swear, roar etc.

Got warned a few times by the umpires.

We as a club were kinda looked down on by the south Dublin clubs.

They were kinda you know snobby in a way.

So we f**king rose up in the dressing room to show in every game we'd let these South Dublin so so's who we were and that we could play as good as them.

In my first game against Avoca, league favourites, I saved a penalty and became a hero overnight with my new team mates.

I used to be so fired up every game.

Creamed any opposition who came into my D. Legally of course 😉. Made them think twice about doing it again.

We went on to win that league. Undefeated.

I conceded only 4 goals all season.

The reason I'm writing this is because you must treat your opposition in sport as the enemy if you want to win titles.

I notice in football hugging the opposition before you go into match is seeping into the game.

Bullsh*t. The opposition are there to be beaten.

I found in my time in hockey I earned the respect of the opposition by my desire in games to win.

I was inspired by my father, if you enter a challenge in whatever way, do it to win it succeed.

I was also inspired by the Busby Babes of my Manchester United club heroes and successive United heroes.

To raise a trophy at the end of a season is a feeling that's amazing.

Dunno enough about the game to have a view Pat, and not sure what's being said. I think they are regarded as doing well so far, having beaten Scotland and Wales. England in Twickenham next, if we win there I guess puts us in a good position to press on ...
