With you all the way with Pretzel Logic Russell..

The Donald Fagen solo album "The Nightfly" (1982)
is good stuff too (probably way too mellow and
jazzy for Grove material) but one thing you could
always be sure of on Steely Dan or successors of
that band was fantastic musicianship. They had
these great session guitarists who were very slick
indeed. The jazz crossover stuff in their later
work mightn't me to everyones taste but they're
a class act (as Padraig Flynn might say )

No Russ, I haven't seen any Dan documentaries.
I must seek them out.

slight aside :
The most interesting (but sad) rock documentary
I saw lately was the BBC one about Syd Barrett's
life and times. Some really moving stuff in that...
and gosh his solo stuff was really off the wall
(no pun intended)...

I've got no CDs or stuff with the old Floyd
(Barrett era) on it though...

Ian

I've seen that footage too .... ah well

When you think of all the great names that have passed on from a great
era

Joplan , Hendrix , Barrett, boland, lynott ....the list goes on

We won't mention all the jazz musicains who have passed on as it's just
too
sad........for example people like Billy Holiday and Chet Baker..

need I say more ??

Hey Ian,

In case you're interested...was in Virgin in Liffey Vally today...and they have Syd Barrett's solo album The Madcap Laughs..on CD...with extra material as well..outakes and aklternative takes...was almost gonna pick it up but only had enough for the two CD's I'd already picked up.

Ah ..found the thread...so ....

Picked up Talking Heads - The Name of This Band Is ...as discussed earlier in this thread ..in HMV Blanch for a very reasonable €8.99. It's a double CD with 12 extra tracks. The sound is excellent...(am listening to it right now) and it sounds as fresh today as when it was released all those years ago..

An absolute bargain in my opinion....

Any Alabama 3 fans? For the uninitiated they're the guys who do the Sopranos theme tune. I'm lovin them for the past year or two (or three - time goes so bloody fast these days...things I thought happened 2 years ago were actually in the last century!)

Anyway they're well worth a listen to "Exile on Coldharbour Lane" is sublime - if any one wants "Woke up this morning" or "Speed of the sound of loneliness" (cover) as a taster pm me and I'll bang them off

BTW Does anyone know who originally sang "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness"?

Cheers

Marie

Yep..is written and was recorded by John Prine...and I spose most famously covered by Nanci Griffith on her Other Voices Other Rooms CD. She does a great version..and is a personal friend of Prine's..and a nicer example of genuine star you couldn't find..but of course I'm a little biased towards Nanci...hehehe!!

Am listening to Wolfmother at the moment. They're an Aussie band heavily influenced by Black Sabbath and Led Zepplin and whats even better is that they're only a 3 piece. Great music too.   ]
