Okay..I know..I've lost the run of myself...but I thought would be interesting to know what kind of stuff we are all listening to these days! Maybe get some ideas for new CD's to buy..or dare I say it..Chrissy pressies...hehehe!!

To start the ball rolling... I'm listening a lot to Thom Yorke's debut solo effort The Eraser at the moment..listen to quite a lot of different stuff..but that album seems to get played more than any other at the moment...

I've got the new Mogwai album Mr Beast on a loop for the past few weeks, it is kickin'... they are fantastic, not sure if many people know of 'em.  Went to see them in the Olympia a good few years back and was v impressed.  I know they played the Electric Picnic recently but I couldn't make it down.  They have such a great sound, sonic landscape type stuff with amazing huge kick ass guitar breaks after great build ups! I think any ex Grover would love 'em.

Em.. I got out my Zeppelin albums the other day, a break from The Tweenies (I have a 2 yr old girl).

When I go walking in the evenings I blast out Led Zep 11 and Led Zep IV. I am very partial to Guns N' Roses "Appetite For Destruction". I still think that is one of the best albums ever.

On the other side of me, I have been playing Madonna's "Confession's On A Dancefloor". Great for a boogie, the track's are all upbeat, great party album i'd reckon.

I also love Bic Runga and The Cardigans.

Am also listening to compilation Cd's I've done recently and over the last year.

Have 26 done now and they have music that I love and span many years and which I bring with me when I'm going away.

I found a bar in Bangkok that lets me take over the music when I'm there and I play my Cd's.

They get great reviews from people who drop in.

Funny enough..

Been listening to a lot of prog rock of late! Meep!

So Yes, Rainbow, Van Halen, Foreigner, Ram Jam, Boston, Fleetwood Mac.. you get the picture eh!

Basically a lot of the old old Grove Classics..

Now where did I put my Stevie Nicks album - I just love her!

O

Like I said before, I'm not that much of a goth to not listen to other stuff.. and er I wasn't always a goth either! I hung around many rockers on summer hols in Wexford as a teenager before, during and after my Grove years!

Also Boston's 1st album actually.  Always loved 'more than a feeling' but even more since the documentary.  In fact, whole album is brill - as is most of Boston's stuff, IMHO.

Think a lot of us Ex-Grovers seem to be like that Orla. I know a lot of the people I hung around with were into other musical types. Some of my best mates were Mods and Rudeboys and Punks..so as well as the stuff I was in to I listened to the likes of The Jam, The Kinks, Small Faces, Madness, The Specials, Desmond Dekker, The Clash, The Buzzcocks...and I still love to listen to that kinda stuff now...like you say...is healthy to have a diverse musical collection. There's very little music that I wont try these days.....cept maybe Country and Irish..I draw the line there...hehehe....

Lately listenening to a LOT of Radiohead and I adore Thom Yorke's album The Eraser..kinda getting more into experimental electronic music..soundscape sorta stuff...so looking for recommendations actually...

Anyway..sorry for rambling...hehehe!! do that when I start to talk about my favourite subject...

I'm a big fan of Buffy...(I know...little old for it..but I love that show
)..and there was this episode were this soul-less demon,  masquerading as a human, was rooming with Buffy and she had a huge poster of Celine Dion on the wall...always thought that was perfect..*g*

Can't say I've heard much of him yet...saw a copy of the CD at a friends house the other night..was a little intrigued cos it looked like some kind of folky blues thing..but then maybe I was just associating with Robert Johnson or something..

Is it any good? what kinda stuff does he do?

Yeah Pat, my Mrs. got me really into them.

She from the US and there's something about cruising around in one of the Envrionment Killer pick-ups blaring the Creedance that's good for the soul.  From then on I was an avid devotee of the gospel according to Fogerty.

I'd imagine it is much like you when you described seeing Easy Rider for the first time in the documentary.

Sorry guys, can't hack that Black Betty song. Rock 'n Roll by Led Zeppelin. YES

Thanks Lorri re James Blunt........."High" just hit a chord with me.

Over the years, and they're many at this stage, a song just catches you regardless of who sings it or whether its a hit or not.

I have many singles that I bought on the hearing of a song that never charted and was never heard of again.

I LISTEN to music and am not interested in videos and hype re this and that. If I hear a song I like I'll take to it and don't care what anyone thinks

Each to his own and always enjoy your music.

As the Doobie Brothers sang "Music is the Doctor"

Think I got it in Record shop in Kilkenny. I came accross it by chance.

Just tried searching online but appears to be available only secondhand online on amazon.

While looking, came accross the "top of the pops" compilations from the 70's. these were cheap to buy as they were cover versions anyone remember them? (they used to sell them in Woolworths - another blast from the past!)

Despite my relatively tender years(!) I do remember these.  My brother bought a few and i inherited the vinyl collection when the gaff was sold a few years back.  Nothing very good in it unfortunately, Boney M and the Top of the Pops records......!

Deffo..don't know how much the tickets are. If you like Quo's music they are really good live. I've seen them so many times and have never been disappointed.

I saw them a few years back in the Point...but have to admit..was only cos I got freebies.

I used to be a big Quo fan when I was a teenager..but really..in the last 15-20 years they have just become a joke band in my opinion. The first half of the set was great..they played all the old stuff from Hello and On the Level and Piledriver...but the second half was pure rock and roll cabaret...in the bad sense of the word...

And in my mind...a "rock band" who have barely a slow song in their set list and who's concert is all seated are suspect to say the least..

That's my rant over with....hehehe!!

My favourite Heads song.

Talking heads were probably the first non mainstream
heavy rock/blues bands which I got hooked into as
a result of going to the Grove. Cecil only played
the one song (Psycho Killer ... if I recall) by
them but I got most of their albums on vinyl at
one stage and went regularly in early college years
to the Ambassador where they had these mad
"Stop making sense" showings every Saturday.
The atmosphere was great ... not as sublime as
the Grove but getting there ...
Some mad antics too. Folks jumping on to the
raised stage area in front of the screen and
bouncers stepping in to calm it down a little

Never made one of those screenings Ian..would have loved to.

One of my favourite bands of all time and like you..have most of their vinyl releases too..tho funnily enough..have never gotten around to getting them on CD.

Think my fave Heads song has to be Once In A Lifetime..and I just LOVEthe video for it..where he dresss up in the overlarge suit and mimics a guy having a nervous breakdown..brilliant.

Plus they gave a name to probably my favourite band ever ..after The Beatles of course...Radiohead...

Nothing more to say on that really

Yep Ian, remember that well. Also remember walking home afterwards with some friends at all hours of the morning.

Fear of Music is one of my favourite albums.Love Life During Wartime as I said, also Cities, Air and Animals from that Album.

Did ya ever get your hands on the other Live Album," The Name of This Band is Talking Heads " ? It's magic too.

I did Rolo but I sold it on during some moment of
temporary insanity. Much regretting that now.
I needed the cash for some electronic item or other
and I sold most of my Talking heads vinyl having
taped a few of the good tracks. Since lost the
tapes, of course.

Wasn't available on CD until last year for some reason. Love to blast it in the car. I much prefer the older Heads stuff and as this was released after Remain in Light ( I think ) it contains most of the early classics.

Yeah me too...like the way it was underproduced and raw...some of their later albums were just a little too clever I think.

Might even pick it up now on CD...getting a bit tired playing OK Computer in the car...not to mention going slowly deaf..heheh!!

Have you got the OK computer album (the new one or the first) Hayseed ?

I've seen them on YouTube (and downloaded the YouTube
postage stamp vids). Great band, great personalities,
love the vids. They would have been Grove material
if it weren't 2006.

Hey hey young lady.

Quo, in my experience over the years, are one of the best "live" bands ever.

Also "Piledriver" and "Hello" are classic albums. Cecil himself played them all the time.

Also their 1977 album Quo Live is regarded by many pundits as a classic live album.

And Quo took John Fogerty's "Rockin All Over The World" to worldwide recognition, althought most people think it's a Quo song.

Quo....oh oh oh ho.........Quo..oh..oh.oh..oh

Rock on the Quo.

Go for it Rolo.....

With you all the way with Pretzel Logic Russell..

The Donald Fagen solo album "The Nightfly" (1982)
is good stuff too (probably way too mellow and
jazzy for Grove material) but one thing you could
always be sure of on Steely Dan or successors of
that band was fantastic musicianship. They had
these great session guitarists who were very slick
indeed. The jazz crossover stuff in their later
work mightn't me to everyones taste but they're
a class act (as Padraig Flynn might say )

No Russ, I haven't seen any Dan documentaries.
I must seek them out.

slight aside :
The most interesting (but sad) rock documentary
I saw lately was the BBC one about Syd Barrett's
life and times. Some really moving stuff in that...
and gosh his solo stuff was really off the wall
(no pun intended)...

I've got no CDs or stuff with the old Floyd
(Barrett era) on it though...

When you think of all the great names that have passed on from a great

Joplan , Hendrix , Barrett, boland, lynott ....the list goes on

We won't mention all the jazz musicains who have passed on as it's just
too
sad........for example people like Billy Holiday and Chet Baker..

The sound is excellent...(am listening to it right now) and it sounds as fresh today as when it was released all those years ago..

An absolute bargain in my opinion....

Anyway they're well worth a listen to "Exile on Coldharbour Lane" is sublime - if any one wants "Woke up this morning" or "Speed of the sound of loneliness" (cover) as a taster pm me and I'll bang them off

BTW Does anyone know who originally sang "Speed of the Sound of Loneliness"?
