Yep, it's the Grove alright

I actually like the song. It reminds me of the time I visited Johnson City in Tennessee.
May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Cecil could drop a needle on any part of a song he wanted to. His
precision was amazing. He can read grooves and was the first guy to ever
be called groovy.

Cecil question: How many grooves were there on the average 45?

Ans: one

Aries - am also doing that at the moment. Even in MP3 format, Vinyl sounds very good.

Ah BB,

A friend of mine said, "never die wondering". Have tried my hand at a lot of things but I have to say I loved the bit of DJ'ing. No strings attached, played what I wanted and did it like Cecil

Don't know about steppin into the maestro's shoes and all these new gadgets out now, I'd be lost

A dedication to Cecil for his inspiration.

When I left the Grove in early 1975 I was totally taken by the way Cecil played and introduced his music in the Grove and by the music he played.

I wanted to be like him and so from 1975 - 1979 I became a DJ and spun records just like Cecil. Not fulltime by any means.

My first gig was in Blackrock for a girl's 21st and there was a huge crowd at it. I did the gig just like the Grove so I can claim I brought the Grove to the Southside .

I got a great response to the gig.

I had just bought a load of 45's off another DJ and those records along with a twin turntable and an old tape recorder (on which I had LP tracks recorded) were the tools of my trade. And a mike as well to introduce the records.

This photo was taken in Keatings Pub in Store St in Jan 1979. That's my brother Chris who used come along and help me set up and carry the gear.

I listened to Cecil talking about working The Flamingo on one of the videos
and had almost forgotten I went to that place.(Good to see you in the flesh
Rolo) Although it was Cecil he had a different format, skipping the fast and
slow sets with the odd ladies choice, to just going mostly fast dance music.
It was a tough and unfriendly crowd and you could not walk anyone home
unless you felt like walking to Finglas or some other foreign place. It got me
thinking to what O'Connell Street was like back then: Five major picture
houses (Savoy, Carlton, Capitol, Metropole, Ambassador) along with the
Adelphi and Curzon around the corners. Movies like Ryan's Daughter and
The Sting would run for a year and a half with huge queues every night.
Where did all the people come from?

I know Cecil loves the Beatles and of course 'Sgt Peppers' album was legendary, just like Cecil.

So to the tune of 'Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band' I dedicate this little ditty.

It was 41 years ago, Cecil Nolan started the Grove
I don't think he knew back then, The Grove would never end
He really started a new style
Guaranteed to raise a smile
So let me introduce to you
Cecil Nolan's Grover's Hearts Club Band

Do do do do do etc....

We're Cecil Nolan's Grover's Hearts Club Band
We hope you all enjoy the show
Cecil Nolan's Grover's Hearts Club Band
Sit back and let the evening flow

Cecil Nolan's Grover's
Cecil Nolan's Grove'rs
Cecil Nolan's Grover's Hearts Club Band

It's wonderful to have been there
Shaking our long hair
You were such a great DJ
You showed us the musical way

He didn't want to stop the show
There came a time he needed to go
But like the Beatles song
He still comes along
So let me introduce to you
Cecil Nolan's Grover's Hearts Club Band

We're Cecil Nolan's Grover's Heart Club Band
We hope you all enjoy the show
Cecil Nolan's Grover's Hearts Club Band
Sit back and let the evening flow

Cecil Nolan's Grover's
Cecil Nolan's Grover's
Cecil Nolan's Grover's Hearts Club Band

Not perfect a la Beatles but you get the story.
