Cecil, I want to thank you most sincerely for all the memories past, in the "Old Grove", and present in honouring us with your presence at the reunions. My musical taste was greatly influenced by what I heard in the Grove. You opened my ears to music I may never have experienced had I not gone to the Grove. My musical collection bears tribute to that. In the Grove you gave us a place to be free and express ourselves when others were shutting doors to us. I will always remember the night I brought Creedence Clearwater Revival's album Pendulum to the Grove and you played it. You see, I had no record player at home at the time, and to hear that album, by my favourite band, being played loud and clear in the Grove meant so much to me. Besides being a wonderful man, you are a rock and roll legend who has his finger on the pulse of music for nearly 40 years and has shared that with us. I am glad you came into my life. I know that this post was a personal tribute to Cecil. Other Forum members are free to add to the topic as Cecil, in my view, was the Grove. Cecil for Saint! What can one say! The Grove - It's such a great memory to have. It was safe, fun and a great experience for all of us. Thanks a million for giving "The Grove" to us in our youth and for still providing us with the memories and long hours of fun with the reunions and website - great idea. I've been looking at this topic since Pat started it trying to sum up what Cecil and the Grove has meant to me and failing to find the words. So I'll keep it short and just add a bit to the eloquence above! I'm privileged to have been a small part of it, its part of who I am to this day, its shaped my musical tastes and definitely my dress sense! So thank you Cecil for giving us that forum to listen to good music and meet the opposite sex! Yep Cecil, you introduced me to the heaven that is Robert Plant and Led Zeppelin. I am forever grateful. I even got married to a fellow grover and have a little 2 yr old girl who loves rock! She even headbangs! They were the best of times, I never had a bad time at the grove and that was because every single song was brilliant. Congratulations on everything you have done and all the people who's lives you have touched.. you should be very proud. I lived for the Grove and stayed for years (probably long after I should have gone but I didnt care as I loved the place so much). Thank you Cecil for all of the great memories I still carry around with me to this day, thank you for introducing me to music that I might otherwise have never heard, thankyou for (almost) always playing my song "for Mel and all the lads at the back" and thankyou for your patience and good humour when I regularly sat on the table, looking in awe through your singles...You're a legend! Let me just reiterate what you have all said about this great man, without whom we'd all be listening to horrible music and would not have any of the fantastic memories we've been able to share on this Forum,

Yep Noodles, I think it should be done for Cecil. Framed etc. If we all put some money into it, you can do it and we sort you the night of the reunion. And I think it would be lovely to put a little plaque on the end to say thanks from all of us, name everyone who is regular on the forum. Shame we don't have everyone in that group photo from the night of the documentary cos it could have gone at the bottom of the frame too. ------------- Never Again on a school night! Next weekend we celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Grove. I'm listening to "Harvest" by Neil Young at the moment. Neil Young is one of my favourite artists but I probably would never have heard his music had I not gone to The Grove back in '72. I say it again Cecil, you are a rock 'n roll legend and I look forward to seeing you next Saturday and I hope for many more reunions. Recalling times past, fond memories, teenage innocence and first encounters with the female kind. It was in July of '72 The air was warm and the sky was blue On my motorbike I did rove To see this place called The Grove You turned left off Mount Prospect Avenue There The Grove came into view It was only an old wooden shack But inside there was almighty craic Outside it was Belgrove Football Club But inside North Dublin's rock 'n roll hub You had Cecil there on the stage Playing 45"s which were all the rage The lights were low with a reddish hue At the cloakroom there was always a queue People handing in their coats Before heading off for club milks and cokes Cecil played a fast set and then he'd tease "That's it, your next dance please" That was when you had to move Because he was slowing down the groove The girls would dash for the jacks The guys would've planned their romantic attacks You'd say "Would you like to dance, please?" Whilst really shaking at the knees I'll always remember "A Littte Bit Of Love" By an English bluesy band called Free I was nervous as you might get Because that was my first slow set That first girl did not stay with me It was the way it was meant to be There were many more after that Some stayed a while, for others it was just to chat I went to The Grove for three full years Sometimes the memories bring me close to tears When The Old Grove burnt down I could'nt go back Nothing could replace that psychedelic shack I'm glad they made the documentary A glowing tribute for all to see Cecil and The Grove on RTE For a place in rock 'n roll history The End

This is just to say thank you so much to Cecil who gave me a copy of the DVD and the CD of the radio show. I watched the DVD last night - spotted a few people I knew and apart from a few sniffles enjoyed it no end. But the CD today, the mixture of Cecil's voice and the sounds were very emotive. Then on came Homethoughts from Abroad and that finished me. Bawled the old eyes out. Cecil it was really great to meet you again after all these years. Cecil was telling me that he was listening to Neil Young from Grove Road. The sound was quite clear because the night was so still. He played the last song from Sergeant Pepper (can't remember the title) and was very impressed by the rendition. ------------- Life is for living |

On a quiet night in a quiet bar in Malahide in October 2006 I met privately with Cecil and handed over a framed copy of this tribute. It was a class place with music you wouldn't hear anywhere else. That's what made so different. Somewhere you just had to be. You couldn't miss a Grove. That would have been a sin. I listened to Cecil talking about working The Flamingo on one of the videos
and had almost forgotten I went to that place.(Good to see you in the flesh Rolo) Although it was Cecil he had a different format, skipping the fast and slow sets with the odd ladies choice, to just going mostly fast dance music. It was a tough and unfriendly crowd and you could not walk anyone home unless you felt like walking to Finglas or some other foreign place. It got me thinking to what O'Connell Street was like back then: Five major picture houses (Savoy, Carlton, Capitol, Metropole, Ambassador) along with the Adelphi and Curzon around the corners. Movies like Ryan's Daughter and The Sting would run for a year and a half with huge queues every night. Where did all the people come from? |

A dedication to Cecil for his inspiration. When I left the Grove in early 1975 I was totally taken by the way Cecil played and introduced his music in the Grove and by the music he played. I wanted to be like him and so from 1975 - 1979 I became a DJ and spun records just like Cecil. Not fulltime by any means. My first gig was in Blackrock for a girl's 21st and there was a huge crowd at it. I did the gig just like the Grove so I can claim I brought the Grove to the Southside .I got a great response to the gig. I had just bought a load of 45's off another DJ and those records along with a twin turntable and an old tape recorder (on which I had LP tracks recorded) were the tools of my trade. Ah BB, A friend of mine said, "never die wondering". Have tried my hand at a lot of things but I have to say I loved the bit of DJ'ing. No strings attached, played what I wanted and did it like Cecil Don't know about steppin into the maestro's shoes and all these new gadgets out now, I'd be lost ------------- May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride. Up until Cecil became a DJ nobody in Ireland ever sat on the floor. We all sat
on hard chairs against the wall. I remember the first night someone sat on the floor, It was a girl. Next everyone is doing it. Then it got out of hand because people started to sit up on the stage near Cecil and sometimes he'd get angry and need to go to the jax but couldnt in case he'd lose his seat ...so he put a stop to it. That's where the expression "Get off the Stage!" came from. Then the movie Woodstock was released and what do you know? Americans were copying us. |
