Hey xgrovehead,

Reckon LOTR only counts as one.

Were you a fan of the book going to see the movies having already decided that the movies could, under no circumstances possibly do it justice and were then gobsmacked ?  or... did you go along with no preconceived notions and enjoy them as just great adventure movies ?

Big fan of the books, thought the movies would be a travesty and probably should never have been made. Went along to see the NZ scenery (big fan of NZ) thinking I'd be tut tutting my way through and was blown away.  Peter Jackson is a legend for making them the way he did.  Was lucky enough to see Two Towers in NZ and went to see a few of the locations including Hobbiton set.  The official movie exhibition was in Wellington when I was there too and that was amazing.  Unfortunately it never made it to Dublin closest was London I think.

Sounds fantastic, tell me this though, were you not disappointed that the Great Tom Bombadil did not make an appearance in the Fellowship?

For me,that was the only criticism,as I thought he was a great character.

Was also blown away, particularly with the battle scenes.

Posted By: xgrovehead
Date Posted: 12-November-2005 at 12:59

I never liked Tom Bombadil........found him a bit boring to be honest. The elevated role given to Arwen bothered me slightly too, and I thought that Faramir wasn't as tempted by the ring as they made out in the film, however I'm probably being too nit picky.  Overall though very impressed, excellent casting and attention to detail.  THey wrote a computer program for the battle scenes and had all the different races programmed to fight in a particular style.  Massive I think it was called, anyway they discovered that at a certain point in the battle, when it was looking like one side was winning, the losing side would start running away!  And they hadn't programmed that into it!  Whats the story with filming the Hobbit?

Two more films for my list,

Cinema Paradiso

Theres Something About Mary.

Well done for outing Biker Pat and his musical disasters.

The Sweet Hereafter - A Canadian movie by Atom Egoyen about a schoolbus crash interspersed with  narration of different passages of "The Pied Piper of Hamelin". Sounds boring but I bet you'll be surprised and I guarantee you will remember it long after any of those awful Hollywood blockbusters.

tony, i have to say i was prepared for a completely crap godfather 3, but i really enjoyed it. it wasnt as good as 1 or 2 but it wasnt far off imho.

went to see a film last night in the pictures, in her shoes. biggest load of rubbbish ever. Fell asleep and had a homer moment where i started snoring. woke up with an elbow in the ribs. dont think anyone in the audience minded tho, cos they thought the film was crap also.

saw harry potter on friday and it started slow but got much better all of a sudden! recomended.

altho hermione is very bloody annoying

Anybody go see the Johnny Cash movie...Walk The Line.

Everybody says its great but my problem is I have been watching and recording a lot of the documentaries on Johnny Cash that came out after his death and they show him in real life nad go through his life story.

So I'm finding it hard to go see someone else doing Johnny Cash as the real JC was such a character and his life story so brilliant that I'm not sure how a movie can capture the reality of what was Johnny Cash.

One of my biggest regrets in life is that I never saw him live.

Did you see the last video he made "Hurt". Christ, it's the more amazing piece of film I have ever seen.

I well up every time I watch it.

JC was one of the all time greats and he was one of the first artists I ever listened to.

Was never a big JC fan so watched the movie with an open mind and no preconceptions. Two good performances by Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon. Was most impressed with the fact that they sang the songs themselves.

Hiya BR , out of the above lot I would defo recomend Cinema Paradiso.

it's a story about a boy growing up in sicilly  who befriends this old guy who works as a projectionist at an old cinema house. The old guy teaches the boy about cinema, and becomes a farther fiqure for the boy. It's a story about growing and realising your ambitions...The composer Ennio Morricone did the soundtrack for it which is fabulous ..

Sounds boring  I know ......but I betcha your bottom dollar you won't say that after you've seen it ...

Re: Top 5 movies-The Killing Fields

Believe it or not but I must have fell thru the cracks somewhere in life as I have not seeing this particular movie and since it has been mentioned so much on the list I must attempt to get it on DVD.

I actually went to visit the killing Fields a year and a half ago when I was last in Cambodia and it leaves such an ever lasting impression on you as do the people. Nearly everyone that you meet has a story to tell of loved ones, family and friends who suffered under this regime... The bit that got me was that they were not that old either and such utterly lovely gentle people. Before I went to the Killing Fields I  went to the Tuol Sleng Genocide museum, which was the former Khmer Rouge S-21 Prison. I got the hotel babysitter to stay with my daughter the day I went there. It was formerly a high school but during the KR regime it became an extermination camp & used for administrations, interrogations & torture. It is eerie to walk into it and see the rooms that were used to torture these innocent men, women, children and infants. Especially touching were the faces of the little children and babies because when I looked at them and then thought of my two little daughters who were both born in Cambodia and safely and happily back in my hotel room I just thought, my God had they been born in that era, it could have so easily been them. There are rooms with thousands of faces of the victims who perished under this regime. They documented everything, pictorially included. You see smiling faces of babies, that could be any baby you know, being held by young mothers whose faces are captured with a resigned look, for they know the fate that lies ahead and how all they can do is accept it. Among the endless rows of faces there are little boys and girls, born by fate at the wrong place & in the wrong time, men, women & the elderly. There are photos documenting the endless cruel and evil tortures these people endured. Hitler in comparison looks a saint by the atrocities that were committed in Cambodia, for they were inhumanly tortured and their torture was prolonged as long as it could so that they were not allowed die. Walking into the gas chambers for these people would have been a luxury and a Godsend. All the buildings are covered in barbwire and this was to prevent them from jumping off the balconies and committing suicide. The signs of the laws, the gallows, the torture instruments are still all there in the ghostly silence of the camp and it is the weirdest feeling to walk thru it as it is like getting the closest to a part of history where the dust has still not settled. There is a large glass case that holds the clothes of the those who perished here. I found this one of the saddest things to look at as they came a people who already had nothing, rags from the people who toiled the land with oxes, reaped the harvest from the paddy fields by hand, they took the only thing these people had, their dignity & lives. Nearly everyone you speak to in Cambodia alive today has had family, friends of someone they knew murdered by this régime. My driver & his wife told me how he had to walk & flee through all the provinces by foot, hiding in the forest, trying to get away and hide so that he could not be captured. His wife told me that her father was captured, tortured & shot when she was only too, leaving her mother and her (she was 2 at the time) homeless & with nothing until a family took them in. Everyone knows someone there who has perished. Hard to believe that all this took place only in the mid 70s to mid 80s. After that I went to the "Killing Fields" which is where many of these victims very buried in mass graves. It is amazing to walk through the grounds now, in the heat of the sun, past all the white flowering frangipani trees, where beautiful animated looking butterflies & birds flutter from tree to tree in what feels like the most serene setting, very peaceful. As you walk along, further past the posts which give the history of what atrocities occurred here, in various languages, you then pass all the mass graves each which hold a signing giving the amount in thousands who were buried in each spot, and if it was a grave of men, women or children and their age group. There is a tall bayon tree there that still has the old aged & rusted nails that were beaten into it, still covered with dried blood, and this is where they use to get the newborns & infants and in front of their mothers, hold them by the legs and whack their heads against the nails in the tree trunks until they were dead. It sounds utterly disgusting, and I am sure many people would say, "I don't want to know", but not wanting to know does not mean it didn't happen. It did, and I do not think that people should ever turn a blind eye to the horrors & evilness that occurred in Cambodia, just like Germany, so that they are never repeated again. Tragically, they are, maybe in a smaller scale, but if it is happening to one individual person in this world, than that is one person too many. I did manage to get in some more upbeat  & spiritually uplifting activities such as shopping!!!! I would really reccomend that anyone visiting over in the Thailand/Vietnam area visit there, it is a country that leaves a haunting footprint on your heart, very beautiful. I plan on returning in about a year or two and want to travel around and visit as many of the temples and ancient sites as I can, take tons of photos, visit the orphanges again. And one day when my little daughters are old enough, I would dearly love to bring the three of them back on a holiday to visit and see their beautiful country of birth. Each of my daughters have Cambodian names and I did this beacuse of the beautiful meanings of their names and also when you visit their and see the pride and love in these people's eyes, even tho most of them ahve nothing they have a glowing pride in themselves and their country. Especially the little children in the orphanges....for them their names are so important as really that is the one thing that they were given and which belongs soley to them. My eldest little girl was so full of the importance of her name which in English means "Destiny" that I would never have dreamt of changing it! She wants to be a Princess when she grows up so I will have to check out the credentials of the Cambodian Royal Family and see if their Crown Prince is truly worthy of her! Now that will be another movie kids to add to the Top 5!!!smiley2

Ann after reading your post I feel you have already seen the movie as you depict it to a tee.  It's a great movie from the perspective of how it was made but it's grueling to say the least.

I've said it before and I'll say it again it's so nice to read your stuff you paint a great picture and bring a different angle to the site.  It's very refreshing I must say.

Wondering how your doing on your kids books - can't remember but thought you did or were going to publish some.  You must keep us posted.

Sorry for not being in touch everyone but have had a very busy couple of weeks here in tropicana.

We had to do an ER trip  to the hospital as my little Millie was covered in a rash from head to toe and it was all blistering and totally infected. She had a fever & lost lots of weight and as she is x-ray thin I was a bit flustered a la carte as we in de trade say. Andres & Veacha were itching and coming out in sores. Verdict; Millie was post viral infection..... she had a very weak immunize system and so things attack her very harshly and severely, Veacha had impetigo/contagious, Andres had eczema and something else. Veacha had pox virus also on her torso, delightful, scabs on & up her nose and a crack on her 'crack' (split of her derriere....... thought I'd crack up laughing everytime the doctor ever so delicately referred to her 'crack'. Andres had two cracks on his winkle area and was not bashful at all about showing them with pride to anyone who cared to have a look and view it. My throat was killing me for the past three weeks prior so as we were there I asked her to peep at it and see if I needed a mouth wash. It came to pass that I was the victim of follicles on my throat whatever they are and it was highly infected. Millie, Andres & I were all sent for a host of blood tests while we were there and then our 4 bags of medical supplies, plus blood tests cost over EC$5000 and that did not include doctors fees of 500.... you certainly would not want to be poor. They each had to be washed in special, soaps, shampoos, and creams and lotions applied to their skin, plus oral medicines. I felt like I was the chief nurse on duty at  ER for two weeks as I attended to each one after another. Andres & Veacha loved it as I would ask who was next on the conveyer belt for medial treatment, and they all lined up in convulsions. When I finished doing Andres I said to Veacha that I was going to do her next so after she was washed, dried & ironed, I applied her creams and then had to attend to her nose and crack areas. Andres has gone like a mini adult at giving instructions and commands so I have to try to put him in his place at times. He was standing next to me like Judas Iscariot gone wrong on crack when I nonchalantly asked Veacha to turn over having applied the said cream to her nasal plugs. As I was putting some of the cream out and mixing it for her other regions I heard Judas beside me say and I quote "Veacha, pull down your knickers so mommy can attend to your crack!" When he said that I just thought, is this what it is all coming too..."cracks"!!! The bit that made it even more amusing was that if you could only see the knickers that she was wearing ..... immaculate non practical snow white, with lairs of white frilly lace and a white satin bow in the middle ...... they were so pretty and dainty that they were the last thing you'd associate with a said 'crack'! They got more joy out of the medical treatment they were receiving than anything else. Andres told Veacha that she was contagious and that she could not go to school or near anyone as she would spread. Once it was not her legs she was spreading, as that is every mothers nightmare....I did not mind!!! When we were in the doctors office Andres took up the stethoscope and checked to see if he had a heart beat. I asked him if he could hear it and he answered in the affirmative so I informed him that he must still be alive so. He said "I'm sure you are relieved to hear that mum!" I said that I was and that it was a weight of my mind! He then put it up to his head to see if he could hear any brain movement or activity. When I asked him if he could hear anything there, he replied "No!". I said "Just what I suspected!!!!" The doctor must have thought we were all appropriately enough all 'cracked' in de head and I was surprised that she did not send us down to the lab for a catscan each.

Hayley Bop (my cavalier king charles dog) was also recieving medical treatment and did a week in long stunt in de vets to have her ears attended to. Dr. Scotland will had to attend to her ears as they were highly infected and sore. She is a bit on the deaf side at the best of times so I have to do the best I can to protect my little furry friends earlobes. I had her all wrapped up nicely in the car the day she was departing from the homestead to go on vacarion to Dr. Scotlands and I told her that she was just going off for some cosmetic surgery and that I'd get her a portion of Kentucky Fried Chicken Breasts (no bones about it!) for her home coming. I called the vets surgery to make sure that she was ok .....I'm sure they dread me there as I call several times a day to make sure that my canines are ok when they are there. I was informed she had made friends with a little dog in the cage next to her and that they had rubbed noses together. I said "I hope that's all they rub together and that she does not come home pregnant". The phone was slammed down on me!!!! Wuff, wuff....life in de Tropics. She is home now and sitting in my office here beside enjoying the life of a pampered pouch in Paradise.

I also have joined the ranks of a motorist as I embarked in the Andy's School of motoring and begun classes last Monday morning. I am doing classes 7 days a week, one and a half hours week days & three hours if I like on w/es'. The guy teaching me is much more pleasant and friendly than my privious teacher Pab Smears was. Indeed after he collected me at chez moi he drove the car out of the drive and down the road and I had to tell him that he had not executed the "Cockpit Drill"  as he was driving without his seatbelt on and he never looked in the mirror once. He seemed to find this utterly hilarious but as I said to him, "If I was doing your driving test, you would have lost brownie points for stunts like that!!!" Last Tuesday morning he had me working on de clutch and changing gears without taking my eyes off the road, so he told me to go into 1st gear without looking down. I put my hand out, grabed his knee and tried to push it forward! His knee was that bony I did not even realize what was wrong until he started laughing and the other learner in the back seat burst out into convulsions! Thank God he did not request me to go into 2nd gear as God knows what I could have grabbed then!!!!! Although having said that he may have enjoyed that and told me to stay in 2nd gear for the remainder of the ride, if you pardon the pun.  He said that I had very good control of the vechicle, whatever the hell that meant but as I said to him. I'd need to have control of something to make up for my lack of gear stick manoveres!!! I told him that instead of having a big L on the top of my car, mine should be a big D for 'Danger!'. I am on the roads upon the each morning at 10Am dot com. ... My nerves are nearly gone doing this driving and I'd say that from the stress & tenstion alone it could be a very effect weight loss method! I have to prayer everytime I near the traffic lights praying for them to stay green so as I can glide merrily by without any upset. Everytime I come to the said traffic lights, a pedestrain crossing, a stop sign & for the piece de resistence, a steep life threatening hill whereby I have to start farting around and changing gears, I conk out and not only conk out but have quite naturally it appears perfected the fine art of conking out with gusto in front of some inpatient fart who horn blown friendly and my nerves are nearly shattered to pieces! I doubt if I will be doing my exam on this side of 06!!!! My driving instructer keeps reminding me about all the "danger points" on the road such as a junction etc and I just said to him yesterday "Jayus it is a wonder the human race ever drives as my nerves were nearly gone awakening to this brand new world of motoring hazzards! For my medical in order to start the lessons I was informed I had low blood pressure but as I said to the said doctor ":Thats ok as everyone else on the road that see's me will be suffering from extremely high blood pressure by the time I am finished!!!!" Well I will be hitting the roads with gusto in a few mins so I better sign off here now before the green lights come on!

be continued....

Hi Ann, missed ya around here.

I've seen that movie several times but bad and all as it is it doesn't begin to portray the horrors you describe.

Two of my mates are just back from Poland where they visited Auschwitz and Dachau and their experience seemed nowhere near as haunting as yours. We're all far more familiar with goings on there, whether it be as a result of several movies and documentaries on the subject,or as a result us being much closer geographically.

Reading your post, particularly your references to having met several people directly affected by the appalling activities of the Khmer Rouge, really hammers home the abject horror of the time, more so because of the fact that it's not so long ago at all.

Would really love to do a trip to that part of the world, especially having read Crusty's report. Maybe some day.................

Greetings Rolo,

what happened during that era was truly horrific and still very fresh as though it only happened, especially when you walk through the killing fields and still see personal items half buried. But it is still a very beautiful and serene place to visit...I can't describe it but when I was leaving the first time, I knew that I was going back and I did 8 months later. Some friends that I made there said exactly the same thing .... I have kept in contact with some of the special people that I met there.......must send you some photos that I took if you would like....my plan is to also go back and assist the orphanage. i opened up a private savinf funds here for the orphanage and if I can get the new books that I am doing published I will be able to do a lot more for them. That's my plan, as this country in a way is like the forgotton I feel and one of the worlds poorest countries right now. The povery is unbelievable but it has a beauty in the countrysides, in the simplicity of life, when you see the familes who live on the river boats and riversides.......and they are always dressed in bright happy colours....compared to Dublin the last time I walked down it...it was like a sea of black Gothic dress....... Mr. "L" will be here in a mo so I'll really have to go!!! smiley19

Maye the next time I am there I should recount & interview as many people as I can and pen a book......each has a story so colourful that they really should be recorded, as it is all part of history

Hi Rolo,

you will be relieved to hear that my husband bought me a new automatic as I had not an intension in the world of farting around with gears, clutches & strange mens knees for the rest of my motoring life!!!! Bought himself one while he was at it so we have now joined part of the "His'n Her's" Motoring Jet set Community!!

Think you're right Peter.

I said at the start, Godfather, Schindler's, Tin Drum, Once Upon a Time in America, Deerhunter for top 5 and wouldn't change that now.

But there's loads more in the " Bubbling Under " section, including some others have mentioned.............

Killing Fields, Salvador, Private Ryan, Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco, Pulp Fiction, True Romance,Taxi Driver,Cuckoo's Nest,LOTR (big Tolkien fan here ) and many others.

Must say, really love Deerhunter and can't ever see it being replaced as my No.1.

Just watched Flight of the Phoenix and it was really really good. - Recommend it folks.

Brokeback Mountain - eh well not great if you ask me but then I cut it short so I was told I missed the best part so might rent again... we'll see...

Irresistible - very good I must say with Susan Surrandon - and filmed in Aussie so all other stars are Australian - good movie and keeps you on your toes...

Only good thing I can say about Extreme they put on a good performance at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert back in 92. They done a whole 15 set of Queen music and slipped that Crappy More than Words song in with Love of my life song....

But Softlad liked them. Where are they now ??? Who cares...

Extreme is the name of a so called Rock band from the 90's. They had a hit with "More than Words" and one or two others that I can't recall.

A pretend rock band from about 91.  A bit like Europe - pretty, blonde, long locks, men. Their 'hit' was a song called "More than Words"  which was basically a cunning plan to get their girlfriends to sleep with them to prove they loved them coz it would mean so much more to them than to be told by them that they loved them.....hence the title - geddit?

Sorry you asked?

The sunny part that T's rain cloud isn't going near!  No seriously the quiet undeveloped bit to the west of Costa del Sol.  Thats the Coast of the Sun and it better bloody live up to its name or I'll be seriously peed off.  (Not that I'll be out in the sun - but I'll sit in the shade and admire how sunny it is!)

rolo, don't listen to a word those other two are saying. extreme happened to be the most prominent band out of boston since aerosmith. like other also very talented outfits they hads the misfortune to have the teenyboppers jump onboard a song of theirs and suddenly take them global before they were ready for it. their sound could be decscribed as a funk rock sound, they've a brass section in a few tracks. more than words happened to stay at number two in the uk charts for 8 weeks and was only kept off the top by bryan adams 'everything i do....' sh*te. their singer gary cherone also had a stint with van halen when hagar left and nuno bettencourt has regularly featured in the top ten list of classic rocks guitarist poll. check out his widowmaker stuff, excellent.  second album 'pornograffitti' had three other successful singles on it. i've caught them live on four occasions (including the monsters of rock festival in donington) and they've been great each time.
