I know there is a couple of Topic talking about Vinyl I couldn't find them so I decided to start a new one
Just picked up my old turn-table and connectec it up through my PC through to my surround sound system
Just listening to my first record in years. I have Roger Waters "The Wall" live from the Berlin Wall from the early 90's. Might start converting my record to MP3 now...
As our very own Biker Pat would say...... ROCK ON!!!...

As I mentioned in one of the other threads, I have 2 turntables (part of a 3 in 1 system) - which used to belong to my wife, before we got married and another one in a mahogany box. The sound isnt as good with the smaller one, as it has built in speakers but its just beside my "singles boxes" so I use that more often. I dont know if I'd convert to MP3, as I just like the vinyl sound and just phyically "playing" the actual record on the deck.
My boss in work reckons that vinyl's making a comeback!

I spent most of yesterday evening going through my vinyl collection and playing a few even though I have them on CD/MP3.. There is just something about playing Vinyl that I discovered yesterday that is missing from CD's and MP3's. I bought a lot of my albums from Car Boot fares and some of them are in a bad way but I found some gems that I didn't realize I had..,. I didn't realize I had a copy of Dio's "Holy Diver" album that definitely got a play last night.. Last thing I need to do is now get a permanent setup for the Turntable.....

Where did you pick up the vinyl, Peter? I'm pretty happy with my collection, as such, but sure there's always room for more!! Its a long term goal (dream?) of mine to replace any plain sleeved singles I have with Pic Sleeves but its gonna take time (and money!) - was it some car boot sale you were at?

Over the past few months I've put flooring down in the attic and organised all the junk into neat boxloads and put in a few sockets -
During the week, hooked up my old JVC deck, TRIO Amp and Wharfdales - AMAZING!
First album was Horses, Then a track from Blue Oyster Cult's first - Then came the last days of May - Hadn't heard it for 25 years or so...
Think I'll move into the Attic now

Was it 'On Yoke' Pete? It's closed now (or maybe it just opens in summer?)
Went down there one sunday on your recommendation only to find tumblweeds blowing accross the scape...

I went through a mad phase of buying picture discs and coloured vinyls in the 80's.
Some of my little teasures are...
a pink vinyl Led Zep 4
a Dark Side of the Moon picture disc
a clear see through (as seen on the back of the album itself) Wish You Were Here
a 12 inch interview Queen picture disc
several Marillion picture discs
and a very very rare 10" coloured (red) EP of four rare 'not on any album' Pink Floyd tracks...

Hi folks - I dont know how many have seen that pic of my old "wooden box" record player (its in that "Grove songs 1980 - 1986" thread). Anyway - its no longer in use as I've hooked up our old 3 in 1 system with much, much better speakers - and the difference in sound - its great!!!! As ye know, I love my vinyl, but I'm giggling to myself playing records this evening just listening to how they sound on proper speakers.
I'm gonna give my brother in law first dibs on the old record player but if he doesn't want it, it's up for grabs, if anyone wants it. Its not exactly brilliant but there's nothing wrong with it, and it even has a CD player, radio and even an old "tape" player built in.
I'll try to cut and paste the pic in here but if I cant, have a gander at the other thread, referred to above.
Edit: Couldnt past the pic in here.
Edit 2: Checked with brother in law and he doesn't want it - he gave all his old records to his bro (my other bro in law). So - like I say - if anyone would like it and can drive to Skerries to collect it, its theirs - free!.

Does anyone know (or can recommend) where I can pick up a turntable 'platter' (they're usually rubber yokes) for a record player? Just noticed that the 3 in 1 doesnt have one. Any suggestions?

Thanks Finno. I did a brief check of Peats website but couldnt see any sign of them. I eventually picked up a "felt" one from e-bay for around €10, including postage - it's a Christmas pressie to myself . Ideally, I'd like to have a 'rubber' platter but from what I could see on e-bay, they're priced at around €40 and I don't want to spend that much. Hopefully, the felt one will do the job but if ya happen to see a rubber mat at a more reasonable price, please let me know.

Have you thought of making one Mel? Just get some sheet rubber and cut it to size. I'm sure it would do the job. Although, if that's a really daft idea feel free to say so!

That's not a bad idea at all Jen. I'll have a think about that as well. Not sure how good a job I'd manage but might give it a try (I'll see how the 'felt' one works - if it works, I might stick with that).

I was up town at lunchtime and I picked up the 1979 7" single U2 Three (with "Out of Control", "Stories for Boys" and "Boy/Girl") in a pic sleeve, on white vinyl. The price was, wait for it, €24.99 but myself and Ciarán were checking it out on the web and it appears to sell from collector sites for much more. I'm a very happy bunny!

Rightly so Mel.
I have one of the original 12" U23 Singles, were only 1000 pressed when it was first released along with the original 7".
Never knew they released it on white vinyl though .
Remember queuing up outside Advance Reords to buy them from Fred.

One of my less clever deals - In 1983 I swapped my U23 picture cover 7 inch for an autographed copy of the UFO Lights Out album1
This was the first of many poor investment decisions!
