Nice thread Peter...

Always Thought Hawkwind had brilliant album covers.  "Space Ritual" folds out about all over the place and this one...

folds out into a "Chaos" shield on one side and a much bigger pic on the other side.

Love the "Yes" Roger Dean covers as well.

Definitely "Dark Side of the Moon"....also Eliminator ZZ Top sticks in my head. You've got me thinking now......I have to say I do miss the artwork. A CD cover is just not the same. Nothing like a good Gatefold Sleeve.

I also liked the cover of Róisín Dubh ...that was Jim Fitzpatrick wasn't it?

p.s. Good Topic

Jim Fitzpatrick did a number of Thin Lizzy sleeves such as 2 of my favourite covers Johnny the Fox and the Jailbreak LP. Also for  strangeness the Brain Salad Surgery by ELP. Sticky Fingers (original with the zip) - Rolling Stones (bY the way the cake on the cover of Let it Bleed was made by Delia Smith).

Also almost any by Roger Dean.

Covers dont have the same impact anymore in CD size. There is very little scope to do much thats different.

Loved Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot too.

Martin - I remember taking the Wish You Were Here postcard to France and

This is my favourite. Loved the way you could move the letters around when you took out the inside sleeve.

Also liked Presence and In Through the Out Door, with the brown bag cover.

Not forgetting Zep III with the rotating wheel in the front cover...

The In through the out Door had a special inner sleeve too didn't it? You could 'paint' it with a wet brush... (very collectable)

Trick of the Tail is one of my favourites,too-where the policeman ends up stealing from the rich man, while at the same time holds up the thief.

The cloud formation around the moon is actually a horse jumping over it...

Very simple cover that,Frank and when you think about it,and very obvious too for an album called the Wall. Designed by political cartoonist Gerald Scarfe who tried to capture that grafitti type scrawl you often see on blank walls where someone spray-cans their name or fave band on it. The band (on Waters' insistance) broke away from a 15 year collaboration with Hipgnosis for this cover,of which there are 8 different types from various worldwide releases.

The album itself open up with a very faintly heard '...we came in' just before the music starts, and finishes some 90 minutes later with '...isn't this where',indicating a full cycle.

The whole piece (just after this) ends with the sound of a Stuka dive bomber dropping a bomb somewhere, presumably on the Anzio Bridgehead where Roger Waters father was killed in WW II. Crank it up to 11 to hear this...

I may be wrong but this thread seems to have degenerated into "favourite albums" as opposed and celebrating album art and design to " Favourite/Iconic Album Covers" and celebrating album art and design.

Monarch - Love the Jeff Wayne's War of the Worlds album art....   Still listen to it especially on train journeys.    Forever Autumn is one of my alltime favourites.

Great article on Zeps Physical Graffiti in this months Classic Rock. The mag has it's own tribute to the cover, where a different image in each window relates to a topic or feature inside the magazine...very clever.

I'm sure not everyone would agree but... : Sedaka, King, Taylor, Croce,
Diamond, Manilow, Carly, Cat, Collins, Cohen, f**king Jonie Mitchell and
Simon really sucked bigwads as a waste of valuable listening time in popular
music... still gives me shivers.

This cover (deleted earlier due to upload error) shows a record executive, depicted as not human,or not really there (oblivious to the fact he's on fire) shaking hands with a real person. The band had quite a lot of unease with the record industry, who often were more interested in 'how many units to shift' rather than the music, categorised in the song Have a Cigar (oh by the way, which one's Pink?)

The album is dedicated to Syd Barrett who was very much present in his absence (the theme of omnipresence clear on the cover too-the man on fire-not really human, the splasless diver-not quite present if there's no splash, the record executive with no face or hands, not really human)

The album encompasses the four elements on each side of the inner and outer sleeves, fire, earth, air and water. The original pressing (rare if you've got it!) came with an extra outer plastic sleeve showing two robots shaking hands, another inhuman gesture, depicting the omnipresence of humanity again, surrounded by the four elements.

While recording the track Shine On You Crazy Diamond,Syd Barrett, whom the track is dedicated to,turned up in the studio announcing he was ready to play with the band again!
