Hiya Folks,
Just asking out of idle curiosity - do any of you still play vinyl albums and singles? I know that Biker Pat does for sure and I think (but I'm not sure) that Black Russian does as well? I'm a vinyl junkie personally but I'm just wondering if anyone else out there still plays the old vinyl??
Cheers,
Mel.

Rarely Mel, still have them all but just don't have the time any more.
Between work, matches, training, kids, pub etc, very rare I get an hour or two to chill by myself to listen to anything .
Nowadays it's nearly always the I Pod or in the car.

Never play vinyl anymore......
I don't believe the human ear can tell the difference Really though...too lazy to be changing the albums and too hard to skip the songs that are crap.
What I started doing was making compilation CD's. IE, I got my hands on every album Van Morrison made and copied all the ones I really like to one folder...Then same for other artists. So if I want to play Pink Floyd I put in the CD and hit shuffle so I never get them in the same order. How many of you have bought an album and found out there are only 3 good songs on it? So I copy them over to the folder and prob never even listen to the original CD any more.
Easy way to get all albums is to get them at the library and copy them...FREE....LOL
Most folders are on a 30 gig MP3 player.
I think I still have every vinyl album I ever bought though but they are in a closet somewhere taking up space.

I gave all my vinyl to Andy when I was back 3 yrs ago. But I think I'll start my collection again. Vinyl getting popular and turntables more available now.
But for now I usually listen to cd's or my Ipod.

I sold all my LPs years ago when I was moving to Denmark. The cost of shipping them was way too high.

Still have all my vinyl, and a decent record deck & great speakers, but NO amp!
Should have the turntable spinning again before Christmas!
Love the iPod, but there's nothing like the subtle crackles & skips & flipping LPs every 20 minutes, but nothing I've had beats the sound from a stylus and a pair of Wharfdales!
btw, Maplins are also doing a "vinyl-archiving turntable" for €69.99 till Christmas.

I have a fair bit of vinyl and still collect 45's at record fairs and the like. I would not tend to play them often. I few months back, I bought a lead and software to convert cassettes and vinyl to mp3, but the quality in some cases was inferior.
My wife has an old friend of hers that lives in Heidelberg in Germany. Whenever we visit, I go to a record shop there that sells only vinyl, including 45s and 33 bootlegs. Some amazing stuff. Last time I got a Sabbath live show from Paris in 1971 which blew me away. It starts with quite literally the best live version of 'Paranoid' I have ever heard. Gives me goosebumps whenever I get in the mood to play it loud. Wish I could get this one on to CD!

The Maplins one is a tenner dearer but I think I prefer the black finish..

My Ma made me ship the lot over to the States a few years back. They're still in boxes but I could never sell them. My kid needs an education when she's a teen. I did drag out my Spendors and hooked them up to a MP3/CD player and generic amp. The Linn Sondek is still in the box along with my tube (valve) amps. The power amp weighs 90 pounds and I dropped the thing doing some damage.... Some day, I'll fix it up! I do have a lot of MP3s and some CDs but nothing beats vinyl on a decent hi-fi.

Thanks Martin, Mel and Jen for the welcome.
I watched the documentary. Knacker drinking? Excuse me! We were a very civilized bunch of drunks! Particularly moving was Cecil losing it on the stage of St. Pauls. They seemed to have skipped over our years. Probably couldn't take the hipness!
Talk soon.

Hey Mel, I'm not sure I can incriminate myself online! I do remember hanging on the stage over in the back corner beside the fire exit. We used to drive Cecil nuts asking him to play Hawkwind albums at the start of the night. My main memory of the Compound involved a girl called Lucy and a toothache. The coats on the floor and a big gaggle of friends headbanging to music we adored is a fond memory. Tanking up in the Annes beforehand and the walk to the chipper in Raheny was always a hoot. They simply were the days of our lives. So many memories.

I spoke to Cecil about that at one of our get-togethers and he said that they couldnt find anyone from 'our years' who was willing to talk on camera. Its very noticeable that the documentary jumps from the time that the Grove started in St Pauls to the late 80s..completely bypassing the early to mid 80s. Shame really.

Welcome Brian. Looks like our years are similar. Probably all walked together to the chipper in Raheny. Maybe the documentary people couldn't find anybody from early to mid 80's. We're all overseas (well a lot of us) Could have done it by satelite though
I miss my vinyl (hope Andy's looking after it)

Sandra got me a turntable, amp, and speakers for my birthday. After my initial excitement and a month or so of trawling through old albums, I came to the conclusion that I have most of what I want on my ipod anyway and it is more convenient.
