I thought this might be an interesting thread if any
fellow Grovers wanted to share what presents they got,
and if they were happy with the present(s) ?..I'll start
my sister got me a new turntable.I was surprised as mine went to vinyl heaven years ago,and I never got around to replacing it.I had great fun digging out my 7" singles, which were stored in my parents, and have'nt seen the light of day in 8 years or so,maybe longer,
judging on how white with dust the sleeves were, and the buzz I got listening to so many old classics really made my Christmas...
hope all ye other Grovers are having a great Xmas hope to see ye all on Sunday

I am joining the modern word - I got my first ipod for xmas. Amazing concept!
Have spent the last 2 days loading cds onto my laptop (still only about 20% of the way through my cd collection never mind the vinyl) before I create playlist to download.
I am finding stuff in my collection I haven't listened to since I first bought it, and stuff I forgot I had - a great exercise.

Not gone near the Alarm set, although i intend to start watching the late 90s gigs tonight. As for the balls, they got a good whacking (o'er missus) at Elm Green earlier this morning. I still suck but at least the balls are going in the general direction of the putting surface, so improvement is at least happening.

I hardly use my PS3 for gaming to be honest, but blu-ray is an awesome experience though. It's kinda hard to go back to DVD once you've started watching movies in high definition. Especially music or sports related blu-rays where there's a live crowd involved.
Picked up a cheap 5.1 surround in Argos last year and have it hooked up to the PS3. Needless to say, our neighbours packed up and moved beside Cineworld Cinema in Parnell St as they claimed it was less noisy there.

Lots of great pressies there. Got lots myself but by far the best one was a trip away for new years to a place called Alston up north as they say half way between Newcastle and Carlisle and about twenty miles from Scotland. Gorgeous little place nothing much in it except for about one church and seven pubs Beautiful walks and very close to the lakes too. We stayed in lovely little stone cottage which thankfully had great central heating as it was minus seven on new years eve !!!!!!!! anyway we had a great time unfortubately had to come home today as had to be in work

Mel, Make sure you switch the inout from TV to HDTV and use the extra cables! Use HD for all you can, trust me, when it comes to the 360 (or PS3 for that matter), it makes the world of difference. :D
Of course, if you're using a later 360 with the HDMI connection, then ignore what i just said. ;)

Mel I agree with Mel, use the HDMI connection if you can the quality is just excellent. I brought my PS3 down to Cassandra house for New Years(she has a 42inch HD TV) and the quality was something else. I am not big into all this HD Ready/Full HD malarky at all but after I saw the difference, even with standard DVDs the quality is much improved. I can't wait to get my TV when I get my apartment .

Hey Shawn,
Erm, even though I have the Xbox 360 and the HD ready TV, I'm not really a techie. I just plonked the yellow, red and white leads from the XBOX into the slots on the side of the Telly - is that good or bad?

Thats good but go to Gamestop and get a HDMI cable for €10 and try that and you see the difference... Don't go to Power City or any electrical shop they cahrge you €90 for one and because its digital it the connection will make no difference...

Ditch that piece of crap cable Mel, that's called a composite cable and it won't take advantage of your televisions Hi Def capabilities. And this begins:
SHAWN RAVEN'S 360 TO HDTV GUIDE FOR THE NEWBIES (I refuse to say dummies, it's degrading)
It should be noted as well BR (who's urging you to leg it out and buy a HDMI cable) that not all 360's have a HDMI connector. The black ones do, and some of the later white ones do, but the earlier white one's don't (mine is also lumped into that category). Now yer probably thinking "i only got mine over christmas", which is understandable, but the fact of the matter is, the earlier manufactured ones white are being offed by Microsoft at cut price as they're being replaced with the black Elite model with the 120GB drive.
A HDMI connector will look like this and should be on the back of the xbox

If you're fortunate enough to have one of those at the back of the xbox, then congratuations, you can obtain full High Def resolution with that. The cable needs to be gotten seperately but a cheap 1 metre cable out of Argos or somewhere for a fiver will do the job, don't go near those monster cables from DID, for consoles, you really don't need to spend 75 euro on it.
Now, if your 360 doesn't have that connector, there is still some hope to hook it up to a High Def television, using what's called a component connection, on the back of a television, will look something like this:

See the five round pin plugs at the right hand side? Your TV should have those, some TV's come with an adapter that converts the blue monitor connection to the orange/blue/green pins (my Sharp one did, whereas my Philips came built in. So if HDMI isn't an option, you can get a 360 cable that will plug into that. The image clarity won't be quite the same as it would be with HDMI, but it wouldn't be too far off either.
That cable will look like this:
The chances are you already have it, in which case, disconnect the yellow part, hook up the orange, green and blue parts and flick the switch on the other side of the cable from TV to HDMI and enjoy.
I realise this has gone completely techy and is probably a horrible post for some to read. I hope it helps you out Mel, and if you've any questions, by all means, drop me a Private Message and i should be able to get ya running if this post fails.

Hi Peter, My Philips Plasma in the front room isn't true HD either, and it's going through component. The 360 does a pretty decent job upscaling it to 1080i (better job than the PS3 does actually because the PS3 tends to look a little blurry upscaled via component but that could just be my television too).
You can get the adapters, but it will still look like component. You're probably better off going into Game and getting one of their component cables for about 8 euro and using that instead for the time being as the PS3 may or may not pick up the signal properly with it, i never tried it so i can't give a definite answer with it. I know i play blu-rays on it and it's crystal clear on the plasma, but GTA IV looks less than spectacular on it, so it could also be that specific game too as a lot of the games written for the PS3 were done in 720p anyway as opposed to 1080p (for reasons that only god knows!)
So yeah, if your LCD has the component input, i'd use that over a HDMI adapter, but that's just me, it saved me a rake of hassle.

Shaun and Peter,
Thanks lads for the assistance - Shaun, checked the back of the Xbox console and found a nice and shiny HDMI port on the back of it. So, just take out the regular A/V cable from the back of the console and TV and then get a HDMI cable to connect XBox to TV and I'm good to go? Right?

Congratulations! Welcome to the world of High Def!
HDMI will transfer picture and sound, so that's all you'll need. Then go into the consoles settings and change the resolution to 1080p (provided your TV will allow it, failing that, set it to 1080i).
Then yer suckin' diesel, as some would say. :)
