Well, if you had to pick ONE song that you most like from the Grove, what would it be?  I was trying to find a thread that already covered this but I couldnt see one. (I also think its no harm to re-ignite some old Grove threads/topics).

My favourite song, as some of you already know, is La Grange by ZZ Top.  How about you?

Tough one Mel to narrow it down to even 20 songs but the Carpet Crawlers sprang to mind first
mainly because a few of us were mad into Genesis (pre '77), had never heard any airplay apart from our own LPs. We were amazed to hear it at the Grove.

then there's Ripples too! and......

Very Hard to Choose, but I will go with She Sells Sanctuary by The Cult.

Very close runners up were Paranoid (Sabbath), Black Betty (Ram Jam, More than a Feeling (Boston) & Rock & Roll (Zeppelin).

Ah Feck off the lot of ya...

Us old timers were there when we had The Beatles, Animals, Rolling Stones, The Troggs etc. to pick from.

We did eventually get new stuff like Bob Dylan and Neil Diamond...LOL

Jeez, some of these songs mentioned I still never heard of. By the time Led Zep came up w Whole lotta love I was already getting too old for the Grove. Seems later on you all went until ye's were older.

So we were listening to Purple Haze and Mony Mony..

Thanks for the welcome.

I'm afraid I'm not a veteran of the site but have posted a couple of posts. My Grove years were 88-90.  I remember making a Grove tape back then of all the songs that I loved and would hear every Saturday night.  It got lost over the years but moving house this year I found the tape again.  It really took me back to some of the best times growing up.  I've actually kept the very first outfit that I wore to the Grove for nostalgia purposes only!!!  A black top, long purple tassel skirt and my black biker jacket.  Oh to be 17 again!!!!!!!

Tara/Brendanfella,

The CDs that Peter compiled are great but, in fairness, they only contain a compilation of 'some' great Grove songs from the different decades of the Grove.  I reckon it would be a practically impossible* task to collate all of the Grove songs played over the years (unless your name is Cecil! ).

* I say impossible, because I collected the 7" singles/songs of the Grove from just 1980-1986, based on my memories and other Grovers memories and I reckon that the collection, though extensive, is not definitive...

Edit: Welcome to the site Tara, please stick around and give us your Grove memories!

You're not dreaming at all Fairy Queen.  I definitely remember "Old and Wise" at the Grove.  I was in the process of collecting the singles I remember from 80-86 a few years back, and I got an e-mail from an old friend of mine (Ian Little) reminding me of this one.  "Eye in the Sky" was another APP song he played.

I wanted to mention REM in some capacity now they have split.

From my Grove days, I remember Cecil playing three REM songs - The One I Love, Orange Crush and Stand. From that, I investigated their back catalogue and became a fan. I saw them live 4 times over the years.  Strangely, I felt relief yesterday when they split. I have felt since Bill Berry left in 1997 that the balance was wrong, so wrong at times as to do damage to their reputation and back catalogue. My favourite period is their IRS years, '83 - 87, pre signing to Warners. An example of a band who built up gradually through constant tourning and then were ready when stardom happened. How times have changed in the music world and the world generally. Now people expect the instant success - the first album needs to be a sucess or you get dropped by your lablel. Talent shows don't help and encourage mediocrity, stifling the real organic stuff which by definition will remain underground. REM were an example of art-rock indie would maintain integrity upon signing to a major label. They come accross as decent guys. I should be sad at their split, but am not - the timing is right and we still have the music, 31 years of it. Again, thanks to Cecil I discovered a real gem.

Well hello there! I am a relatively old "groovy grover", my golden years were c. 1971 to 1974 (age 16 to 19), but really by end-1973 I felt I'd had the best of it. But what a few years "it" represented! Coming of age in so many things - mainly them mysterious things called "girls" ... we were knacker drinking in the park before it was called knacker drinking ... and lots of other stuff! Have been aware of this forum for a while but just decided to jump in now - maybe the arrival of my second adolescence! Or something ... Anyway, my favourite song in the Grove was Starman, David Bowie's classic from the Ziggy years. Will be back...

Cool. I remember seeing a couple of live bands there back in the day - Blueshouse for sure (twice I think), maybe Elmer Fudd or The Urge as well - around 1971 ? Happy days! Few of us from St Anne's, just the other side of the park - long hair ,"hippies" we fancied ourselves as!!! Great fun, thought we knew it all of course, sure we were harmless God help us
