I think it could be of assistance to members to have a thread to pass on help and/or tips.

So to start the ball rolling.

Posting a photo

I use Photobucket as an example here.

Generally the easiest way is to sign up to an online host  upload your photos to a host web site, e.g. http://photobucket.com/ - http://photobucket.com/  or http://www.flickr.com/ - http://www.flickr.com/ .etc..

  1. Register

  1. Go to upload
    3. Click on “Choose files”

  1. Select image to upload

  1. Click on “open”

  1. Photo will upload

  1. Select “Direct Link”

  1. Open “Post Reply” on Grove Site
  1. Click on “Tree” Button.

  1. Paste into box and click on “OK”

  1. Photo will load in frame

A lot of I.T. problems are caused by an 'ID Ten T ' problem.

To fully explain what an ID TEN T problem is here I will re phrase it in working man terms or plain English ID TENT, = ID 10 T, = IDIOT and from experience or computers a lot of PC users or bleeding Idiots

Freebird is excellent at doing this. (not explaining very well, I mean I send mine to Mary to fix)

What a great tread.   You go into a shop and buy a computer and then bring it home.   Most people unless they work in the industry get out of touch with the new technology very quickly.   So It is a great idea to pass on some tips.

Anyone know how to improve download speeds?   I have tried Portforward.com but to no avail.   IP address is fixed and cannot change it so if anyone knows how I would appreciate it.

By the way Joey fab looking girls.

Help
I use Firefox which I find great but recently I keep losing my bookmarks(favourites).
Firefox seems to update fairly regularly, and sometimes I lose them and other times I dont. A
s you can imagine its a right pain. Has anyone a solution such as how to save list/links elsewhere.

Same here Finno; I lost my Firefox bookmarks during the week, but I hadn't upgraded. Thought it was something I'd done.
Just browsing now and there's an add-on called Foxmarks synchroniser to back up and manage your bookmarks from any computer.

In my opinion I avoid downloading and installing Internet Toolbars. From experience I have found that toolbars can slow computer down and also internet browsing. They can be easily uninstalled from Start\"Control Panel" and "Add/Remove Programs".

Some people find them handy to use so it each person preference.

If you are using them and you are having a problem that some pages are not opening in a pop-up window you need to "Disable the Pop-up" Blocker on the tool bar. Depending on how many "Toolbars"  you have installed you  you will need to disable them on all the toobars

Great thread Finno! I'm gonna pass on the best bit of IT advice I ever received - GET A MAC!!!! In my experience PCs are nothing but trouble, slow and full of viruses. Macs make sense - even the IT retarded like myself can find their way around without any trouble. Vote Mac I say - for an easier life! Well worth the extra few quid.

Friend has a mac, must try it. One of the main reasons I switched to Firefox was better tested and less bugs.

Pete I agree I got rid of these toolbars.

Can't comment on the MAC at all myself never used one and only had to work on one once. Only thing with MACs they are not really a great games machine, but they are meant to be better for other things especially Graphical software

I love my Macs! and have never had a problem (apart from those caused by the big nut in front of the keyboard

question - We have a Dell desktop that was working fine till recently - it now takes 5 mins to boot up and load firefox.
What should I check?
I've run norton utils, ccleaner & spybot, and stopped anything in startup.
I'm going to put in more memory, but as it had been working happily, I'd like to know what happened. Nothing has been installed apart from XP updates.
Thanks ! CP

hmmmm. one of the fans is noisy on booting up.

also, I did replace the graphics card, but it worked fine for ages with the new one...

should I check every process running in the task manager? seems like a lot of work.

There are 7 or 8 'svchost' processes running, no idea whether that's good or bad!

Roundy... It could be a few things that causing it to go slow. You have done everything I would do to to resolve the problem. Double check the graphic card uninstall and reinstall it.. Check the fan(if it has one) is spinning. My fan on my graphics card stopped at the weekend and caused me a few problems..

Mel how did you clean the fans out ??? A can of compressed air is great for that just don't put it too close..

I tried to access Hotmail (playgroup account on it.) It "recommended" that I upgrade and when I did, now I can't access the blo*dy hotmail account. Windows seems to have hijacked my whole system as my main whatever its called was google. Now its some microsoft.com something or other. Not too much of a problems as I just go to google but annoying I cant access my hotmail account properly. It lets me go into it, but I cant open the emails. So I can see I have an extra email, but I have to go to my laptop where I haven't downloaded anything to open it!!!!

What can I do. (I've tried the internet options and put google on it but it still goes to microsoft.com.

But I need help to open hotmail emails.  Help

Not familar with the Hotmail accounts so I don't really know what is happening. If you installed something new on your PC lately you can do a System restore.

Right - my €0.02

Anti Virus: Notron & McAfee are crap overweight programs and waay overpriced for what they do. Uninstall them straight away and install something like http://free.avg.com/ww.download?prd=afe - AVG Free .

Firewall: Stop intrusions on your PC/laptop and also stop software on your machine accessing the interweb if you don't want it to. http://www.zonealarm.com/store/content/catalog/products/zonealarm_free_firewall.jsp - Zonealarm is what I have on the PC.

Spyware: http://lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php - Ad Aware - again free!

Alternative to MicroSoft Office - http://www.openoffice.org - Open Office - open, edit and save MS Office (Word/Excel/Access/PowerPOint) files.

There are loads of free pieces of software out there just as good, if not better that the ones you pay lots of money for!

If you have paid for McAfee I would wait till your subscripiton has expired and then install AVGFREE

To remove it and any other programm go to Start\Control Panel\ Add-Remove Programs and highlight the program and click uninstall..

Gary / Pete - I had a lot of trouble with McAfee no matter what I did could not un-install it.   Eventually had to get a patch to do it.   I have Kaspersky which I bought - it covers the PC and the three laptops .   I find it very good and it was only €10 for multi user.   It updates automatically.

KB - thanks for the info.  especially the Ad aware and Pete thanks for the CCleaner - have a lot of stuff to get rid off . - with everybody downloading music and video torrents.    A job for a rainy day ( so any day will do !!)

This is a great tread !!

I'd actually get rid of it ASAP. Norton & McAfee tend to use up a lot of the resources on a PC and its alleged that they don't do what they are intended for as well as the alternatives!

Yeah Pat thats right... When you post a picture on the Grove website from Flickr or Photoshop etc etc all you are doing is creating a link to the your picture on Flickr from Grove site.. If we all started to "upload pictures" on to the Grove Website it will take up space and slow the Grove site... Flickr and Photoshop host the photos on their own servers.

I have done it in the past and once you do it once your'e flying.

For the euro symbol on most machines it's Alt GR and 4.

No charge for that advice.

I had this posted in The News and Feedback Topic with no answers from you geniouses (Except Sharon, who was no bloody help and just sl*gging me)

How come in certain Topics I do not have an "Upload image" link?

I do have the other link "Add Image" but it seems I need a URL to it that way. I have succesfully posted images with the other link.

Any Help, Thanks

I just checked a lot of Topics to see....It seems there are only a few I can use the tree w/arrow icon to post from my PC but MOST  of the Topics don't have the second icon.

I can post in "Interesting Pics" but not in "St. Annes" and MOST others. Is there a way to use the URL one if posting from ur own PC. I have pics of St. Annes circa 1966/68...not great pics cause of age....but pics just the same.

WHY DON'T I HAVE THE SECOND ICON IN ALL TOPICS!

And before I get Chastized....I am SHOUTING...LOL

Hey Brendan, I noticed that too a while back and couldn't sort it, so I put my few pics on to Flickr and used the url icon to link to them. Sorry if that's not much help, but sticking them on Flickr is free anyway!

Monarch - on iTunes: (and the Music icon selected) your iPod will sync all songs that are 'ticked'.
Untick all the ones you don't want to go on the iPod, then with the Devices/ipod icon selected, click Sync  - et voila!
hope that helps

Could anyone help

I got a windows update ( bloody vista) on the laptop - everytime I reboot I get "don't turn off your computer windows is configuring 1-3 updates."   But it never configures.  So everything is grinding to a halt.  I turned off the anti virus and rebooted - nothing.   It won't let me uninstall the update but gives me no error code.    It is driving me nuts.   Had a look on line and could not understand any of the posts.   HEEEEEELLLLLP

Not IT at all but still need help.

I have a Dolby car stereo that has radio, casette player and holds 10 cd's (in boot of car). Radio and cassette deck work ok.

My cd player worked for the first few weeks but now it won't work at all. When I try to play a cd it says 'error'. I've tried turning them around, putting it in the other way etc

Help, any other ideas I can try. (the garage want at least $80 to just look at it. Not paying that obviously)
I'm not sure how old the stereo is, the car is 2003 Grand Jeep Cherokee (not sure if that makes a difference)

I have it on the laptop here and its fine - never been any issues. However, it needs a decent processor and at least 2Gb of RAM!

I've always been an Apple guy, love their stuff & I've never had any Microsoft products at all.

My wife got a laptop this year with Vista and we all love it. No problems at all (edit - except below!). As you say K, it does have 2Gb.

Maryi, (may be relevant) I did have to download install Service Pack1 a dozen times, but persevered and it worked!

Lesley, the problem could be either a dirty lens, or a bad connection from the box in the boot, to the player.

Try a lens cleaner cd, else
could you hook up the CD player box to an amp in the house to test it?

Thanks Ciaran,
I'll get Jim to try that. Its strange that it was working fine for a couple of weeks and then just stopped working. I'll get Jim to check the connection too. You can hear it whirring around trying to select a cd, picking one and then 'error'.  very annoying

Lesley, this might sound stupid...but try swapping CD's n see if the prob goes away....If you have one bad CD in there it might lock it up. Hey, at least it would be cheap if that's the prob...or select each CD number seperately, does it happen w all?
