After speaking with my husband which also was a true Grove goer he told me some crazy stories.

To start he was off out for a Saturday night  and proceeded to go for a few ciders down St. Anne’s Park and onto the beach front where he smoked himself to death - black Moroccan I believe… yikes… from there it was up to the Grove where he desecrated the place per the words of one of bouncers.  His friend was pulled by the collar and sent out to take care of him.  What a sight – you’d never believe that of him now…  He was left by one of the bouncers hanging over his motorbike and when asked by his friend could he drive home – he said, start my motorbike, which he did… he then drove home and was greeted by his Mother… Jasus Martin she said to her husband – will ya look at the state of him… the rest was pure history.  Grounded for a week!

Where to start with St. Annes ....... I remember the special branch out one night and they chased us through st. annes, up the avenue and across the fields (just at texaco garage). I still managed to hang on to my Ritz and outran them, the things we had to do!

Funny that you say that! I had an email from my sis in law this morning regarding the grove and she told me that herself and my brother met at the old grove - and in her words said "Love stories begin at the grove" ditto....

wow!! That is probably unique..

they should have been on the documentary...

Can't imagine there are too many people who met at the original Grove and are still together now..

My friends and I were too "posh" or lazy to go knacker drinking in St. Annes. We just plastered the make up on and went to "the sheds". For years my mother thought I was knacker drinking, she didn't realise it was a pub!! We liked our comfort even back then. Plus the guys were better looking in the pub.

Ah you missed out on an entire era in the park... Nothing like swigging out of a bottle walking up the mansion road...

Welcome Irish_Mammy

Ah, knacker drinking was the business.  Bit of a pain on winter nights but there used to be droves drinking down the park down near the old mansion during the summer.  Scoff 3-4 polo mints or mint gum on the way back up and you were sorted.

Teresa/Kay did you both hang around together during the grove years? And were you always in touch or did you meet up again on the website?

My worst memory of knacker drinking was the last new year's grove I went to...Our modus operandi was to knock back a naggin of vodka then leggit into the grove before it hit and we became obviously drunk...object of drinkin being purely to get drunk and brave etc etc ;)

I used to hate vodka so drank it straight (quicker!) and had to take a few deep breaths to make sure it stayed down - on this particular nyg night someone asked me a question too soon and I was caught off guard and the whole naggin came back up before it even hit my stomach! No more drink left so there I was sober as a judge on new years eve, completely irritated with everyone who was as drink and foolish as I longed to be - complete nightmare I'll never forget it :(

Bluebell yep we are both from St. Annes and went to school together and hung around together.  Lost touch although one of Kay's good friends Ita is my sis in laws sis so I would always see her and she'd fill me in on how all the others were doing.  She was also a good friend from back then.  There used to be about 3 gangs of us that would meet up down the park or at the grove or we just did things now and then with a few different people within the group.  We had the best life really.  I met up with Kay again out here and met up with her and the gang when home in May.

AAAHHH,knacker drinking in park, what a ritual. Why oh why was it necessary, nay, compulsory to rip away the label from the two litre bottle of cider? To see how much you had left?

One precious night Tonto and I got our stories rehearsed for the Rosemount off licence (how old are you, where do you live etc) and got 4 Harp and a flgon of cider. I think it was a new years or definitely Christmas time. I started on the cider and Tony had two of the Harp when we were getting bored with the taste. Half way through the drink we swapped-of course this was perfect snakebites-except they were being mixed in our stomachs. Didn't hit until we were in there.Spent the WHOLE night in the compound bringing it all back up.How we weren't booted out I'll never know. Barry Reynolds and Ciaran White (anyone remember them?) sat there just laughing their arses off at us.

Even now when I see cider I can taste carrotts...

I fainted on the stage on night, and the bouncers had to carry me outside. When I came through they kept asking me about what I had taken and how much ????? I had taken nothing not even a drink, was stone cold sober, but I don't think they believed me......after about half an hour or so I was back up headbanging again, but the bouncers kept giving me strange looks all night.
