Okay...as Floydman...oops!!Posh Floyd suggested...here it is..the all new, bright and shiny Camera Thread. Any questions, observations, theories, downright sillyness even related to cameras and all their wonderfulness can be posted here.

It relates to ALL cameras...not just those big fancy SLR's and DSLR's.

Of course..it may well disappear into the oblivion of the archives...that's up to you dear member.

But for what it's worth here it is

Okay...to start this thread running..

How about everyone tell us what type of camera you have ...and what bit and bobs go with it...?

My pride and joy is a Nikon D80 10mp DSLR, 50mm 1.8mm Prime Lens, 18-135mm Zoom Lens, 70-300mm Zoom Lens with Macro.

Also have two old style SLR's on the way from Ebay.A Ricoh KR10M and a Canon T50, both with assorted lenses. So gonna be doing that film thing soon as well.

Why are you going back to film HD?

I have an old Olympus OM 1 SLR totally manual but a great camera also have a Pentax SLR with assortment of lenses

Hardly use either of them now as we have a little sony digital camera, small and light, point and shoot for happy snaps does the job just about

Years ago I was big into Photography used to develop and print my own stuff. But later on as I didn't have the darkroom facility any more I lost interest.

As mentioned somewhere else I hope to buy a Canon 400 or Nikon D80 soon, duty free, so I can get back into photography again. I also love playing around with Photoshop an amazing program no matter how much you learn there is always something more!

Reading about all the menu options on the Canon 400 nearly does my head in. I think initially I will use the 'automatic everything settings' until I figure it all out

Question for you HD or anyone else.
The Nikon D40 and Nikon D80 - big difference in price here. The only difference I know of between the two apart from price is that the Nikon D40 does not have automatic focus am I right in saying that? are there any other major differences that you know of?

Posted By: Hayseed Dixie
Date Posted: 20-August-2007 at 15:24

To answer your first question Freebird...I guess I am just curious what I could do with film. I pretty much missed the whole film thing..have only ever shot Digital since I got into it. So I just want to experience it and see how it compares. I'm booked on a course at the end of the month..a one day course in Darkroom printing and developing..another reason I bought the cameras. I only bought two cos I was drunk one night and bid on 5 different SLR's on ebay!! ended up winning two of them...;-)
They were cheap though so not complaining.

As regards the difference between a D40 and a D8O ..there are quite a few differences, reflected in the price difference. Don't really have time to go into all of them here..but basically the D40 is aimed at entry level  people with little or no experience of SLR's. It is limited in the type of lenses it can take, as far as I know it will only take Auto focus lenses..so you can;'t use any of the older manual Nikkor lenses. Also it does not take a battery grip..which would be important to me as it's a bit small and I like the battery grip for the convenience it gives when shooting in portrait mode.

Also if you check the specs you'll see that it falls short of the D80 in a number of technical areas as well..more of which later. What I would say is that if you plan on getting deeper into photography again then you'll feel limited by the D40 a lot quicker than the D80, which is basically a Semi-Pro camera. There are only two steps up from the D80..the D200, with which it shares a lot of features...and the D2X, which is the top of the line Pro Nikon.

You mught also look at the D200, which the D80 is more closely related to. It is more expensive, but is better built and has a few extra features.

Btw..I bought my D80 from Hong Kong and saved quite a bit of money. So that's something else to look at.

Here's a Direct comparison between the two cameras that I found online. Btw..the site it's on is a brilliant camera resource site as well.

It's the D40X btw...which is the upgraded, and more expensive, version of the D40.

Well My camera is the http://www.panasonic.co.uk/high-zoom/dmc-tz3eb-k/index.htm - Panasonic DMC-TZ3 . It only has a small lens on it but it can Zoom in as good as some of those big LENS SLR camera. Size doesn't matter. Click on the link and check out the spec yourself.
For a complete an utter novice I recommend it. It takes great photos as you have seen and it has come down in price by up to €80 but shop around and waffle that you are getting a better offer somewhere else.
Its also great for getting into Concerts too

Roundy I have been taking around 150-300 photos when I take it out on a day.

HD great idea for a thread.

HD, Thanks for the link on the Nikon D80 v D40. Had done a search myself but didn't come up with much.

I think the Nikon D200 would be way over kill for what I need and would also blow the budget need to keep some funds for Guinness in Dublin

HD I am sure you will love the course, although after using digital and Photoshop you will probably find film limiting, unless you can develop and print your own

Its so easy to start drowning in all this techo stuff with cameras, having all the gismos and gadgets does not necessarily mean you will take good photos, yes they will help but basically I think you can take a good photo with what ever camera you have, it all comes down to if you

‘Have and eye for it or not’

Good composition, interesting subject, and how you crop/frame a photo can make a huge difference.

100% agree Freebird. A lot of people "upgrade" to more expensive cameras and expect an immediate improvement in their shots. Of course when it doesn't happen they get disillusioned or annoyed. You can give someone a top of the range camera and if they haven't developed (excuse the pun) the basic skills they'll still take ordinary shots.

I used my first "proper" camera..the Fujifilm S5600 for the best part of a year and got to know it inside out and learned about composition and exposure and apertures and use of light before I looked at moving up. My main reason for upgrading to a full SLR was that I had outgrown the Fuji and found it quite limiting..especially with things like shutter lag ( still drives me mad when I use a P&S) and the rather clunky means of zooming and setting exposure values. It was quite liberating when I first got my hands on the D80..and it's not something you'll really appreciate until you use an SLR.

Once you get used to it, it's very hard to go back to using a Point and shoot camera.

Of course the great thing now, compared to when you used SLR's is that the price has really dropped, hence the amount of DSLR's you see on the street now, and if you want to shoot film then film SLR's..especially the older ones are being practically given away on Ebay and the likes. I bought my Canon T50 with a 35-70 zoom and a 75-200 zoom, a 2 x Extender, a flash unit, a set of Cokin filters and mount and a whole heap of screw on filters for just over €90!!

It's a good time to get into photography folks...film or digital...

Hey Pete..if you really are thinking about moving up to DSLR's then you could pick up the D70..which is a slightly older DSLR from Nikon but still a bloody good camera. It's only 6MP compared to 10 on the D80 but don;t get fooled by that Megapixel marketing ploy..anything over 6Mp is totally acceptable unless you're gonna be printing 4ft wide posters!!

I've seen kit versions with a lens and memory card for around the €650 mark. Just a thought.

My camera is a Pentax ist DL digital SLR. I use an 18-55mm prime lens and a 70-300mm zoom with macro. I´ve been thinking of updating to a Canon or a Nikon but now have decided to stick with the Pentax for the moment. I´m also thinking of buying a 28-300mm zoom lens so that I don´t have to keep swapping lenses all the time.

Black Russian: I like the look of your camera. Very handy.

How do you find that camera Robbie? Can you use all the old K-Mount Pentax manual lenses?

I've just bought a Ricoh film SLR and it takes the Pentax K mount.

If you've invested a lot of money in lenses be crazy to switch... suppose it depends on how much you can afford to spend.

Any pics to share there?..hehehe!!

I have a Canon A75 Powershot which has 13 different shooting modes but I only use/know how to use two-video and auto shot.

Autoshot does everything for the eejit like me,measures light, zooms, waits for focus so no blurs, all I have to do is press the button.

Really must R.T.F.M....

It takes a whole range of old manual lenses including the K-, KA-, KAF- and KAF2-mount 35mm-format lenses. This was one of the reasons why I bought it. I thought that I could find some really good lenses at reasonable prices. I spent months searching the net for reviews of all the major makes of DSLRs before I decided which one was right for me.

I have plenty of pics but I have no idea how to post them here. I have tried. http://www.mysmiley.net">

Had a feel of the nikon D80 today, beaut camera but a bit on the big side for me, my hands are really too small for it. The Nikon D40x is a perfect size but not sold on that yet.

Pity as there was a real good deal on the D80 + I could get it Duty Free

Will check out the Canon 400D and the Olympus E400

HD you should have real fun printing on Sat - let us know how you go

Posted By: Hayseed Dixie

I have a friend who has the Olympus E400 and she loves it. Couple of people on Photography Ireland use it too. It's really small and neat..so if size is an issue it would be ideal. Quality wise you are going to get equally good shots from any of these cameras.

The D40    really is aimed at entry level users and given your film experience I reckon you'd find it quite limiting pretty soon.

Could always go hogwild and buy a Leica M8 Rangefinder...hehehe!! Better win the Oz lottery first though

Well it's certainly not a bad thing Pete for sure

But the one mentioned above is a Rangefinder...the film version was the cameraq of choice for some of the mosty famous news photographers in history and some of the most iconicshots were taken with it. Mostly cos it was light..small..easily concealed is top quality and basically it handles like an SLR in a compact body.

This one http://www.dpreview.com/news/0609/06091408leicadlux3.asp - Link is even based on a Panasonic. But that is there regular compact range. Can pick that up for about $600. They supply lenses to Panasonic and a few other manufacturers, but their rangefinder system is the bees knees. If ya ever come across an old film Leica rangefinder at a car boot sale..BUY BUY BUY!! *L*..Not much chance of that though..heheh!!

Actually, I still do most of that with the D80. I only ever shoot in full manual anyway..so the only really difference is the focus. The only time I would use manual focus is when shooting close up or macro shots. But otherwise you might be surprised to see that all the old rules still apply.

Of course most importantly... the composition is still the same...so if you could take a good shot back then..you'll be able to do it now...except now you get to see the results instantaneously..hehehe!!

I've been shooting with a film SLR for the last week or so and I still find it weird not being able to see the shot I've just taken...

Worst part is having 3 or 4 rolls of film and wondering if you've exposed them all!

HD where would I get Neutral Density filters? preferably ones you hold in front of the lens?
I think I might know someone who knows someone who works in Conn's

All - the ND filters give that effect of 'soft' waterfalls when taking pics of water - that right HD?

Yep..it sure is Ciaran.

I have a ND8 myself..which gives about three stops extra...haven't used it much though to be honest...must post the only pic I've used it on so far.

I bought mine on ebay...and it's the threaded version. Just got a whole heap of Cokin filters (the non threaded type) with the Canon T50 I bought...can't remember seeing an ND filter in it..I know there was definitely a Graduated ND okay. If there is one you're welcome to borrow it...they can be quite expensive to buy here and it's not something you'd end up using a lot.

I bought my ND8 from this shop on Ebay and found them to be excellent.

This is my first..and so far only, attempt at using a Neutral Density Filter. It basically allows you to use a slow shutter speed in daylight and thus give the "silky" water affect as seen in this pic.

Not the best example ever...but it's the only one I have for now

This shot was taken in Dun Na Ri Forest in Co. Cavan..which is somewhere well worth a visit for either photography or just a relaxing day out.

Thanks Finno

Well..today I spent my first few hours in a darkroom printing my own film shots!! was well chuffed!!

Don't think I'll be trading in my D80 just yet though...was great fun and very informative ..but was very involved.a lot of stuff to remember. It was great seeing the image appear as if by magic on the photo paper when ya drop it in the developer liquid.

Might give it another go sometime soon

Did you have to develop the film as well or did you get that done before hand.

That was alway the best bit trying to load the film on the reel and putting it in the canister, all in the dark

Posted By: Hayseed Dixie
Date Posted: 27-August-2007 at 12:45

No ..never got to develop...cos it would have taken too long to do the whole process..but he gave us a quick run through at the end.

There's a bag you can get now apparently for unloadingthe film and putting it on the spool....so ya don't need to work in total darkness

My new lens arrived today. I´m a happy camper. I´ll hopefully get a chance to use it tomorrow, weather permitting. OOh I can hardly wait.

Okay camera folks. Thought I'd drop a link to a new camera forum that I'd love you all to check out. It's been set up by myself and some friends  with the aim of providing a friendly environment to learn and expand your knowledge of all things photographic. We have Professionals and total beginners alike and are hoping to build a great information site for photographers of all levels of skill and experience.

It's literally just off the ground and we need all the support we can get...so new in fact that we still haven't decided on a name...(any ideas gratefully received). So pop along and say Hi and get in at the start. I'm going to put a post about this site in the websites section on the site too, as I'm pretty sure we have a few Ex-Grovers in the photographic community.

Anyway...if you can..pop along and join up and take advantage of some of the experienced heads on the site..oh and there'll be some pretty nice shots too...

Oh yeah...if any of your friends are into photography tell them about us too...

Oh and for any of you techies (hello Pete) one of our members is Mark Minasi, author of multiple books on Windows and a world renowned Windows expert. He's a friend of our site administrator.

Quite impressed really :-)

Will register later on as newbie/beginner/ as soon as I think of a groovy user name

For those of you in the market to buy a camera have a look at this site. Its excellent

It provides very comprehensive reviews and comparisons with similar cameras.

(Note there is a pull down menu at the top of each page, giving features, tests and comparisons. I missed first time round).

Thanks Freebird...that's really appreciated. Hopefully you'l learn a lot and contribute some of that knowledge too :-)

I second about DPReview as well. Excellent site. Did a lot of my research on there before buying my D80. Well worth a gander before forking out your hard earned cash.

Oh btw..my nick on the photography site is Expresbro ..same as my Flickr account.

Cheers

Edit:  Btw..what's wrong woth Freebird? Pretty groovy name in my book ;-)

Yes HD its a great site, think the tutorials are a great idea. Seems to be a lot of people there who really know their stuff.

Well after much deliberation I have bought my camera, ended up with Olympus 410 as its a lovely compact size for an SLR and I am more likely to lug it around with me

I have so far managed to set the date and time functions and have figured out all the auto settings.

but blow me down the manual functions are going to take a bit of getting used to. 'White point balance' etc etc - bit different than the old SLR's. Think I will have to read the manual

Posted By: Hayseed Dixie
Date Posted: 03-September-2007 at 17:15

Hehehe!!I'm afraid in the new technological photography, reading the Manual is a must..

Iknow there are a couple of people on the site that use Olympus digital cameras...so ifyouhave any questions post them in a thread and see who comes back.

By the way folks..just wanna let any of the camera people know, that don't already, that the site now has an official name and new web address (although the old link will still work).

The new web address is http://www.thephotorooms.com/ - www.thephotorooms.com

Anyway...good luckwith the new camera Mary...can't wait to see some stunning Australian landscapes soon

Not sure if any of you are interested, but next Tuesday there's an all day exhibition of Photography related equipment in Croke Park. There'll be lots of stands there with multitudes of camera gear (Nikon have a stand..woo hoo!!) and if you bring you DSLR with you, you can even get your sensor cleaned for free (I imagine there'll be a big queue for that).

Here's a link to the site for the show. Hoping to take a half day at least and visit it with some pals.

Okay Peeps..thought I'd give this thread a bump and remind anyone who's meeting at the Zoo on Saturday to bring their cameras along. Always a few good shots to be had there.

And of course myself and Pete and Roundy will be on hand to help out and give a few tips ( might even be about photography if you're lucky...hehehe!! )

I got a new camera yesterday. A Pentax K10. I bought it on the net from a firm in Sweden so the manual is in Swedish, unfortunately. I have downloaded the English version and am about to print it out, all 232 pages of it. Its a great camera, but I´ll really have to read the manual before I start using it for real. I took some pics yesterday and they were very good, but with a few adjustments to the settings they can be great. I know what I´ll be doing for the next few days.

A question for all the good photographers here.

How would I go about getting an old photo reprinted professionally in Dublin? No negative so it'd be a copy of the actual photo. Any suggestions as to who would be the best for that?

Carol,

Michael the chap who owns the Photo Shop at Donaghmede is excellent and very obliging - just dont tell him you at not in a hurry!!!!  He calls me the woman who wants things "yesterday" - found him really good.

Second choice would be Pixels in town - kids use them and find them A1
