I'm delighted to announce the confirmation of the Hallowe'en Reunion '06. It's the same idea as last year - fancy dress encouraged but not compulsory - "Come As You Were", i.e. dress as you used to back when you went to The Grove or other discos in your teen years (you can dress like teenagers do these days if you please, but I find leaving things to the imagination is more fun...). Or dress up however you please. Last Hallowe'en was one of the best Reunions ever, our aim this year is to make it even better! Check out the photo gallery to see photos from last year's Hallowe'en Reunion -

I just presumed you were staying sober to see Softlad in his Spandex. So I was just advising you to get drunk so you won't remember that ungoddly sight(Sorry I mispelled site in my previous post)

I checked at the newsstand on O'Connell Street on Wednesday lunchtime and the guy said that the tickets arent out yet..btw, does anyone know if Cecil stands in for the newsstand guy on occasion? I've passed close to there on more than one occasion over the past few weeks at lunch and there's a fellow there who, if it isnt Cecil himself, is the spitting image of him.

I'm defo going to try and go to this one and drag out the mates.. going to get one of them to get the tickets this weekend too.
I couldn't make the summer one - had a lot on.
But I've a question for ye. Are people actually going to dress up in clothes they wore back in the day?
Or is yer normal usual fancy dress?
Just wondering on this..
As ok, I've tonned down over the years, despite still into the music.. but... if it was "Come as you were".. then..
I don't want to be the only pleb with
1) Having my hair first crimped and then backcombed with fringe spiked up with gel, hairspray, soap and good knows what else - so my head was a mass of blonde mess that took days to get to rights again.
2) Wearing Pale make up, dark blood red lips, dark blue eyeshadow (don't do the pale make up and dark blue-black eyeshadow anymore as tbh it looks gank on over 21, never mind a 34 yr old!)
3) Wearing either a paisley shirt, a white grandad shirt with belt low on hips, a black shirt, or the shiny purple shirts. Name of type escapes me on the purple but ye know the one's - the one's with the big long tail at the back, that was all the rage back in 89-90!
I'm nearly 100% sure that I've all of them still in the wardrobe dying for another night on the tiles - would have to check to make they still fit but I think they do!
4) Wearing my docs with the key rings on the label part at the back of them. Did anyone else do that?!
5) Wearing a long floaty black skirt. I think I've still got one or two that have the rope trellis at the bottom that I bought in Shree (think on Grafton St)waaaaaayyyyyyy back!
6) covered head to toe in Patchouli and musk
7) wearing numerous crosses.. I've still got them, though I don't wear most of them anymore!
and to top it off
8) My dad's ex work uniform jacket - black with brass buttons on it..
9) and outfit complete with the black shiny gloves with my rings on the outside.
I have to top it all of with a bag these days for all my bits and bobs but back then everything (including the smuggled drink) was stuffed into the inside pockets!
Oh and can't forget the Polo Mints & Stag!
Can't wait as I think around Halloween '90 would have been the last time I was at the Grove (or attempted to go)as I was in college then, so had other blokes (men!) to chase!
I was defo there for Halloween 89 anyhow!

Hey Aurnia,
I've not been to a reunion before but, from what Crusty says at the top of this thread, the idea is to come dressed as you did back when you went to the Grove if you want - that said, I couldnt tell you how many people do so. I will be attending this reunion (ticket permitting) but all my old Grove clothes are gone So, I dont have my "scorpions" denim jacket, biker jacket or patchy jeans or desert boots (s'pose I could wear my old duffel coat!). I can however find a fairly old pair of denim jeans and just stick on a 'star wars' or 'lord of the rings' T-shirt, s'pose that'll do anyway...
Re buying tickets this weekend, they werent selling 'em from Austins news-stand last wednesday anyway and I rang the Sheiling tonight and the receptionist said that it would be another week or two before they had them there...so, I guess we have to wait for them...

Thanks for the info Brunswick about the tickets not been on sale yet....was gonna go out to Sheiling tomorrow so you have saved me a trip for nothing. Aurnia it must of taken you forever to get ready for the grove with your hair and make-up. I had long permed shaggy hair back then (as did everyone elce in the early 80's) that I would just shake into place and then have a bath in indian oil, then look for my jeans(faded of course) desert boots, grandad shirt and an old waistcoat and then off we would go.....two buses to get there and a taxi home and soooooo worth it.

Hiya
I got to the April one, which was my first reunion. Ah it's a bundle of laughs. I really enjoyed myself reliving my youth!
I couldn't make the summer one, because ehm I'm saving for an apartment - should be snagging within the next 2 weeks, so it's nights in for the mo other than the nights I'm dj'ing at, The Cult at the Red Box (can't miss that) and perhaps VNV Nation in the Village, Oct 22nd. http://dominion.gothic.ie/vnv/ - VNV Homecoming gig - mates of mine are bringing the band and Ronan back and the club I dj for is supporting the gig, so I have to go!
Re. Dress up. That's the fear - I'd hate to be the only one to go all the way out to what I exactly wore!
Please tell me others will!! I've not been to the Halloween one's before, so I'm hoping people do.

I have all my clothes.. but that's probably because I'm a girlie and like I haven't changed a lot..!
Goths - we don't change.. not the real one's.. sure we're UNDEAD!
Lol!
Nah, I have grown up.. well sort of..

Oh right. The Sheiling doesn't have them either.
Must text me mate back then. I live in Glasnevin with no car, so I have to get them from town or from the Shieling. I think he'll get 3 or 4 tickets anyhow - three of us want to go and if we can drag a few non ex-Grovers who would be up for the craic, we will - though I realise it's taking a ticket or two away from others.
Btw I saw the ad on the TV a few mins ago again...

Hey!
Believe me, I would have kept my old clothes but all of the jackets were practically falling apart (the buttons on the biker jacket had rusted). I've still got the long hair tho' even if it is thinner with a, ahem, bald spot, on top (it was, and is I suppose, a major trauma for me to discover that my hair was thinning being so fond of long hair these past 20+ years) but I dont actually "feel" any older than those Grove days in the 80s. I still keep my vinyl collection close to hand, which helps me in my nostalgia!
PS For what its worth Aurnia, I'll probably dress in Jeans, old T-shirt and old Duffel coat (must see if they sell anything like the old desert boots in town), so I'll be sorta in my old Grove gear...

Yeah it took me awhile alright! Probably not as long as it takes me these days with the what to wear decisons to help me look thinner - back then it was all floppy and big shirts.
But yer right - took a few hours to get ready.
Hmm must that extra effort on hair and make up into getting ready for Halloween.
My hair still long & wavey.
Note to self - dig out the crimpers. Haven't used them in about 3 or 4 yrs if not longer..

Aurnia,
Yep the Ambo is a great venue.....seen a few good bands there though think my taste would be a little different....Was at Simple Minds...enjoyable enough...saw Motorhead there in '04...roll on 31st October...they play The Olympia....should be a good night....
Thought Ian did a brilliant job of interpreting Jims work...I was impressed....The Cult tour listings have been in Classic Rock for the last few months....
Ever travel abroad to see them?

Yeah the Minds.
I hadn't seen them since '89 so was looking forward to it. Wasn't in the best of health for both Bauhaus and Simple Minds but enjoyed them anyhow.
I didn't get to see The Cult back in '91 or was it '92. Long story but the jest was that friends of mine at the time weren't going and I wouldn't go to concerts on my own back then, so didn't get a ticket and then found out that a sister of one of them managed to get a ticket either as a pressie or won one but didn't offer me the ticket and I don't think they used it..
Same friends wouldn't go to Depeche Mode, so I missed out their '93 gig..
So this year is a big year for me as I got to see Depeche Mode after 22 yrs and soon (crossfingers) The Cult after about 19 yrs been a fan.
So to answer your question, no never went abroad to see the Cult.
I did though travel for The Sisters Of Mercy in Brixton Academy in June '97 and Bauhaus, Brixton Academy, Nov '98. and also to the Wave Gothik Treffin in Leipzig, Germany '01.
http://www.wave-gotik-treffen.de/english/ - WGT but a lot of the bands there wouldn't be main stream exactly.
Oh and saw Placebo twice in Avenches in Switzerland '00 and '03 but that was a bonus as I was visiting friends.
I'm too broke to go abroad to gigs now.. or rather I'm not, but I'll have a mortgage soon and have to be responsible etc and grown up!
Oh film on RTE featuring goffs and some bloke wanting to be a Peter Murphy lookalike! Reminds me of an ex of mine!
Har!

Actually I've a good few Cult mpg's!
