Morning All! Judge Judy here! Welcome to the new Grove debate central location where issues can be addressed, discussed and debated.

We ask that you keep it light and to the point.  No harsh words will be permitted.  You’ll be barred for life if you upset anyone especially me.  Try to keep political and religious issue to a minimum, save those for the bar where you can have a good knock down drag out argument.

So with the rules in place, shall we proceed?

I think you'd have to be more specific about the type of intelligence here.  Do you mean emotional intelligence, spatial intelligence or just general common sense.  Every gender has its strengths and weaknesses - and some people just can't help getting rear ended!

Obviously that's settled then.Next question please.

Seriously though,d'ya not have to back up your assertions with reasoned argument, logical trains of thought, anecdotal evidence and references to reknowned studies etc.

Who's first ?

Sorry, did that before I saw Xgh's.But the general jist of it is still the same.

Should dogs like doberman pinschers, Pit bulls, German Shepherds be around children?

I personally think not, I feel these dogs have a tendency to turn on a child quite easily.  I seen a child last year who's face was completely destroyed by a bite from their family pet?

A topic thats running at the moment over here in Ireland

Should Gay people be allowed to marry?

I think they should be after all we are all the same and people should have the same rights whoever they chose to spend there"married life" with it gives people so much more rights to pensions, inheritence etc and itll make it easier in later life ....

I'm for it!

Yeah, have to agree with yiz on that one girls.

Have no problem whatsoever with any couple enjoying the same rights and privileges afforded to what some might call " proper married couples " and may I also be so bold as to predict that the incidences of " marriage " breakdown in gay relationships might just be less than in what some might call normal marriages.

Please now head for the " Guilty / Not Guilty " Thread.....................

Drink driving

1 is ok...get in and drive home no prob

2 is still ok....drive home no probs

3 is ok......drive home with one eye out for the gardai

4 is ok.......if you just up the road

What do people think?

For me its got to be none whats point in having one only to be gagging for more...so leave car at home..price of taxi is far cheaper than a death or to be put off the road when you need car for work

Ok here goes.

I don't know if you know this Teresa but the powers that be in the ESB made a change to the lights on the twin chimneys at the Pigeon House last summer.  Instead of the friendly red lights they now have glaring blinking white lights.  Aircraft safety is the reason being cited for the change..............never caused a problem before. Bring back the red lights I say.

And if we can't debate that what do you think of allowing children as young as 8 have their own mobile phones and tvs in their bedroom?????

I don't know much about the light change but would have to think there was a good reason behind it.  If aircraft safety is one and a legit one then I say fine.

I don't think 8 year old kids need to have mobile phones!! as for TV's in the bedroom, neither Martin and I go for it.  We have 3 telly's around the house - bed is for sleeping and thats our rule.  They have a million books in their bedroom so that's what they do at night.

Yeah,Kev got his phone when he was 12,got it at his confo.Small fella keeps asking when he's getting one and is being told the same thing. It's freaking him out and he's only 9.Don't go for the telly in the bedroom at all,'cos they see enough of it when they're up.

No opinion on the lights,sorry.

I would have always said no but I have seen so much horrible stuff here... so I'm for it especially anyone who touches a child.

should they wait 20 years for killing someone they have no doubt did the crime.

Conversation stopper - Why's that - people kill, people get killed - children get the bad end of the stick all the time - abductions the lot.

So with that said - surely you all have something to say about it - it's really not something I like to think about but it's real...

It is very sad that Bertie is bowing to George and helping him break every
treaty ever written on prisoners of war. I suppose threat of the US pulling
their investment out of Ireland could mean an end to the Celtic Tiger. Ah
still...I hope the Irish are at least a little embarrassed at what they are
supporting and don't start waving the anti-American flag when all is said

I can just imagine that in Ireland!

You know I always said if I was a recovering alco which I'm not - not yet anyhow - Ireland is the last place I would want to be as everything revolves around the pub......  as I know it most pubs do not close until about 1 - I may stand corrected on that.  Clubs well you can always retire to Leeson st. if you so wish a long night out.

I'm on the fence about that!

Yeah but Teresa,we've a system here that throws thousands of drunken people out on the street at the same time every friday and saturday nights. This leads to untold mayhem when there's not enough taxis to get everyone home.Imagine the scene, thousands of drunks killing each other just because they can't home. Why not allow pub owners dictate their opening hours so people can then make for home at their chosen time.

Yeah but were talking about Ireland! are you out of your mind - married couples would be no more.  Children would be fatherless... Fathers would be leggless...... all the bleeden time and there would be no taxi's as all the drivers would be in the pub....

Now that just doesn't work for me!!!

I think they should throw all the 20 year olds out at 12, then the 30 years old out at 1 and the 40 years old out at 2 and so forth....

Nah Teresa,don't think so.

Think people are sensible enough to know when it's time to go home.Even in Harry's at the weekend although they serve til 12.30,by 12.15 it's started to empty out.Only the hardened few remain to try to get a beer at 12.45,( and normally we succeed.)

Don't agree with Pubs staying open late. Not every one knows when they have enough Dave is a Taxi man and the story he tells would make you sick.

What does evey one think of the new bar that was meant to open tonight on the grounds of the Stardust. That fellow should be sent to Jail.

Here's an interesting snippet:

"Booze Britain?
Drink-fuelled crime and violence slump after new licensing laws take effect
We were warned: Liberalisation of drink laws would fuel disorder
The sober truth: Serious violent crime has fallen 21% - and is down by twice
that in some towns - while there are 14% fewer woundings
As for drinks firms? They are reporting no windfall profits

By Nigel Morris and Julia Kollewe
Published: 08 February 2006
Serious violent crime has fallen by more than a fifth since the licensing laws
were liberalised, police figures show.

Major industrial cities, seaside resorts and market towns from the south coast to
Cumbria are reporting dramatic falls in alcohol-fuelled assaults and woundings
after the country's antiquated drinking laws were overhauled."

They should extend the drinking laws to 24 hours and there would be hardly
any crime at all.

Hi All,

The neck of yer man is unbelievable.  People forget very quickly, I think people probably would go in.  Although maybe not now with all the publicity. Hasn't there been a pub beside it all along trading normally Skellys think its called.  Maybe finally there will be a proper enquiry we'll see what happens with what Prime Time came up with.

I was in NY in June 02 and there were pubs with signs out - closest beer to Ground Zero - I kid you not.  When it comes to making a buck some people have not shame.

Licensing laws - I don't know.  You go to continental Europe and people sit chatting for hours over one beer, never sick on the streets, never queues for the loo.  Irish people have a different attitude to drinking, thats why McDowell's (no theres an Irish politician we could have a good chat about here) cafe licence idea was laughed out of it.

Still I don't think the answer is to cut down on the opening hours either - the hours at the moment are fine, there's lots of pubs in the city and in the suburbs with late licenses and there's lots of clubs if you have to go on later.  And you can always be sensible and leave before closing and beat the others to the taxi queue.

Morning all,

Have to agree with yiz on the Stardust thing. We lived five minutes walk away from there and I'll never forget the effect the tragedy had on the area and the longlasting effect it still has,as is evident from the interviews with the family members and survivors.Xgh is right, there was a bar on the site,Skelly's ,not sure when it opened or closed or if it's still there even.

I'm amazed that anyone would ever go into it.Even the odd time if I've to go into the Industrial Estate I get the shivers.

Having watched Prime Time last night, the new evidence seems a little " wishy washy " but I sincerely hope that Bertie and that idiot McDowell ( did I pick ya up correctly,Xgh ) can see their way to re opening the case.

On the licensing laws and Continental Europe,I often wonder is their more relaxed drinking culture due to the fact that they're not in a race to get as many down their necks as they can before they're kicked out.

Laughing at Pogue's reference to Booze Britain,I was knackered in Dundee on Friday Night but two of the lads went clubbing and described the scenes at " chucking out time " exactly as you see on the telly.

Jeez,that was a long post.

Skellys lounge has always been opened but Butterly was never the licencee and it was closed just before xmas for a refit and only few weeks back was the licence transferred back to butterly it was in the name of the silver swan trading company or something not too sure of the facts and butterly is owner of that company( was told this by my cousin how true it is i dont know...didnt see prime time last night) I know it was very bad timing for him to relaunch his pub that bastard should know better but as Ive been told many people drink up there and will always drink up there.......I for one wouldnt set a foot inside the door or knowingly support any of his companies and really I cant understand how local people can support him.............Im sure most people would know someone who was affected by the stardust tragedy and have never oe will never go near his place

Who will ever forget that, a gang of kids from Edenmore died.  One of the girls in my class lost both her cousins and their dad was a firefighter that night.  Every time I go to visit my parents grave I walk past all the Stardust graves! So sad.....

Did anyone of you read the editorial in todays Irish Times about it?  OK they are being supportive of the Victims Committee but such a patronising tone.  And on Monday they described the doves that were released as pigeons, any daft eejit knows that doves are pigeons -white ones!!  Fecks sake they make it sound like someone released a bunch of carrier pigeons cos they couldn't get doves.  Ah its the northside anything with wings will do.  For fecks sake.Angry

Right, vented, better now.Embarrassed

Found a very interesting article on the Butterlys on the Sunday Business Post website, here's the link. If it doesn't work you should find it from the main paper.

There should be an emoticon for spitting........................

And that brings up one of my pet hates (one says you, you have loads!)

Spitting on the streets - its disgusting, filthy and should be against the law.  Once years ago I was walking down Grafton Street in my lovely black desert boots and a scumbag walking chatting to his mate turns his head aside and spits and it landed smack on my desert boot.Angry
