I could never tune in to β€œnearFM” from Ohio but finally copped on and found the live-stream on YouTube. It was a huge coincidence and thrill that on my first listen I heard Cecil and Derek reminiscing on the β€œGrove Posters” by the Carroll brothers (Tony, Brendan and Sean). After working over half a century in the art business it is flattering to have work remembered from my teenage years and even more of a thrill to be mentioned as a tiny part of Grove history.

Cecil also talked about Bono, Pat Mc Morrow, Larry Mullen, Marty Whelan as ex-Grovers, but who the hell ever heard of them guys?  HAH!Tongue

Pogue

That is amazing that on the night you finally connected with the radio show that Cecil and Derek were the guests.

When I meet up with Cecil and Derek recently they were reminiscing about the posters and who made them and your names were mentioned with fondness.

My memory of Mount Prospect is filled with images from the posters on the walls and were a major factor in creating the unique atmosphere in the place.

As for my name being mentioned in such exalted company must make the others feel honoured lol πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

Gerry - Thanks again for coming in last night. It was a great show. We will have to have you on again sometime.

Pat and Gerry - thanks for reminding me of this site. I have to admit if it wasn't for the Grove I wouldn't be on FB at all. It serves a purpose but I'm increasingly not a fan of the medium. Its a necessary evil if you like. This site is where I first got to know ye all. Pat - I still remember you introducing me to everyone back in 2006. Robbie's reaction was a scream - he couldn't get over Sister 1 being a bloke! Gerry - I was thinking of how welcoming everyone was then when you commented how myself. Jen and Lynne welcomed you last night. That's the one thing I like most about the Grove - great people to add to the great music. Its a powerful combination. When Cecil was on recently he asked me off air if I thought the Grove would ever die - my answer was that it will continue to live on - music is a gift for life and it keeps on giving. It still does after 51 years so no reason why it shouldn't keep going.

Brian.

Brian, you lad - you came back, as you said! Nice one...

Very interesting question about the Grove thing, I have actually thought about it. I suppose there are two ways of looking at it:

The simple (and maybe best): the Grove was/is about music, but also about friendship - music will never die, nor will friendship;

The complex: The grovers are getting older (as everyone is anyway). As the Grove club itself is no longer - in the sense of a physical venue, new membership cards etc - that manifestation of "the Grove" necessarily has a limited lifespan. So, how to keep the Grove going without these things ... Well, we have the Radio show, we have the websites, we have the get-together so (reunions). Cos of time constraints last night, and cos I'm a complete waffler (as I warned you lol) I never got to say things like - I think the Grove is a kinda state of mind around good music, good times, loyalty to mates, loving life, "not being a prick", etc, etc. So maybe there doesn't have to be a venue or cards etc once the Grove mindset is kept going ... How to get "new" people into that vibe is the question. I don't know the answer yet, but I am thinking on it...

Jaysis, Brian, you'll def be an asset back here, you have me little brains workin away like mad ...

Last word for the night (from me anyway!):

I forgot to say, bout the show last night: I told Joey I was going to try get a dance off the ladies during the show! Well, one of the lady presenters agreed to a little bop, and we duly had one! I suspect it wasn't captured on the feed though ... I cannot say which lady, and I certainly cannot say what song we danced to (except it definitely wasn't a Blur song, which was a matter of some anxiety!!!).

That is all! G'night until tomorrow

Missed all this. For what it's worth I had fantastic fun to myself listening to music, scouring You Tube for anything newish and Groveable (Masters of Reality fit the bill for me, also Violent Femmes, wasn't sure had either been played in the Grove). I'd say, without exaggeration, I considered/listened about 150 songs, in various combinations, before coming up with my 25. And we got 24 of them played, not bad I guess! I had a fantastic few weeks doing all that "work".

Well the way I used YouTube Sean, I tend to listen to most of my music on YouTube, and it seems to "remember" what stuff you listen to. So I scanned extensively through YouTube to catch all I had been listening to in recent times, then in some cases looked for a "lesser-played-but equally-good" track from the same band. I am always listening to Zeppelin for example, but stuck in "The Ocean" and "Bring it in home" as tracks equally worthy of playing but don't seem to hear them so much. That kind of idea. Also I have some stuff on Spotify so double-checked that as well. The only song in the final list that was completely new to me was the Violent Femmes "Blister in the Sun". I heard that by chance on the radio (Nova I guess) while driving and pulled in to listen to it. I just thought it was spectacular stuff. The rest of the songs were already "mine" ,

Cheers Brian. When my dog was walking me earlier, I had a thought, which probably doesn't make any sense: would it be possible to get 2 hours (a shows worth) of music, talk, bits of commentary and interviews, out of the reunion in couple weeks? Mind you, if someone were to do that, it would be work rather than enjoyment for the ! But the end-result might be good?! Anyway, just a thought ...

Gerry that's a good idea and one we thought about for last year's 50th. Near FM do have equipment for outside recordings. The issue is as you point out - whoever did it would be able to enjoy the night as much. We are getting flyers printed to advertise the show and will be handing them out on the night to raise awareness. Cecil will also give us a plug.

Good stuff Brian, sure see what comes out of it. I was very interested in the way Cecil and Peter selected the songs to be played on Friday - they weren't at all constrained by feeling they had to play songs across a 30-year timeframe (at least I don't think they were), they just played what they reckoned was good music ... Interesting approach!

Thanks very much Brian, and Happy Easter back at ya, and all on here. I am very upset to miss the gig tonight but will be in HB next month and hopefully a second reunion this year. Have a great night.

I was smiling to myself at that competition. Now maybe I am missing something glaringly obvious, but I could find no reference to the "Beatles" anywhere in the AC/DC song. I mean Cecil made it perfectly obvious what the answer was, but that's what took so long...was I thinking of the wrong song, or is there some version of it (other than the studio one) that has such a reference Or some indirect reference to the Beatles??!! I is baffled somewhat ...

What was the question and answer?

Pat, Cecil played 3 songs through the show - Rock n roll I gave you all the best years of my life by Kevin Johnston; it's a long way to the top if you wanna rock n roll by AC/DC; sh*t, I forget the other one now, it'll come to me. The question was what had they in common. The answer was the Beatles were referenced in the lyrics to each song. Two of them were simple, but for the life of me I couldn't find a ref to the Beatles in theAC/DC one. But Cecil gave a couple of supplementary clues and it was obvious it was the Beatles he was on about. I'm still not sure if I just got the 3rd song wrong and it wasn't that AC/DC one. But no one else came up with the answer during the show ... bit strange ... Am I missing something obvious I wonder!6

The Beatles were name-checked in the lyrics ... But I can't find them in the AC/DC song ? Maybe it's me ...

Maybe he meant they were referenced but not directly named in all three? Anyway, with the other clues (he played a Beatles song, also mentioned Johnny and the Moondogs - that was the deal-maker!) it was easy enough ...

Yeah ...maybe Brian will take us out of our misery!

Anyway, I got the boxset prize so I'm delighted - but still would love to know if there's something real obvious I missed ...

It's A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'N' Roll)"

Ridin' down the highway
Goin' to a show
Stop in all the byways
Playin' rock 'n' roll
Gettin' robbed
Gettin' stoned
Gettin' beat up
Broken boned
Gettin' had
Gettin' took
I tell you folks
It's harder than it looks

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
If you think it's easy doin' one night stands
Try playin' in a rock roll band
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll

Hotel motel
Make you wanna cry
Lady do the hard sell
Know the reason why
Gettin' old
Gettin' grey
Gettin' ripped off
Under-paid
Gettin' sold
Second hand
That's how it goes
Playin' in a band

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
If you wanna be a star of stage and screen
Look out it's rough and mean

It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll
It's a long way to the top if you wanna rock 'n' roll

Well it's a long way
It's a long way, you should've told me
It's a long way, such a long way

Cheers Frank, and Brian. To be honest I googled the lyrics of all three songs on the night, and the AC/DC one threw me. I'd say that's why there was so little response to the quiz! Maybe Cecil remembered some of the lyrics wrongly, or as you say Brian maybe there's a different version of one of the verses, or an extra verse somewhere, or live version that mentions them...

...anyway I got the boxset, so go me ...

Beautiful here in Stradbally, 21 degrees, bright sunshine. Hope it's nice where all you guys are ...

"Gettin beat" perhaps mistaken as sounding like Beatles.

Anyway Gerry did well. That's a great box set to win.

I'm not entirely surprised Brian, Cecil was making reference to "starting to creak" on the show the other night, and I guess it takes a lot of energy and motivation to do these kinds of gigs - and he's not a young man, sadly, like many of us!

How find it go last night? What kinds of numbers were there?

It was enjoyable as always Gerry, but numbers were down due to Easter. Just timing really and probably not helped by no trains either.

It's totally up to the lads of course and they've probably thought long and hard about this but I hope they're not basing their decision on last night.  I reckon Easter Sunday was always going to be a smaller crowd for the night that's in it.

Not sure when they made their decision,, but if Sunday night is the way it is going they would have no choice    but to pull the plug ,,it was kinda sad to see the turnout ,,but in saying that we made the most of it and the music was as good as ever

I kinda agree with that Joey, re them having no choice.
Personally speaking, though, I would have loved to have gone but we had a family dinner arranged, being Easter Sunday, and I suspect a lot of Grovers were in the same, or a similar, position.  The last few before this one were fairly crowded weren't they?  That said, Andy will know the numbers (tickets sold etc.,) so perhaps the crowd has been getting smaller anyway?  Shame though - you lads (and lassies) on here have stuck with the reunions (as have I) and it became something we could all look forward to and meet up and have the craic.  Ah well, as Andy says, we can still organize get-togethers at HBs etc.,  Just have to have more of those. Big smile  There's gonna be killings for the tickets in November though - I think Andy confirmed recently that the Abbey Tavern only holds 180? Hopefully, there's some sort of advance notice from Andy/Cecil on here for us "serious" grovers before word gets out on Facebook, for all our loyalty..... LOL  Hopefully, I'll still bump into Cecil on the Dart every Tuesday and he'll give us a heads up when they're going on sale.

the only reason I didn't go is it was a Sunday, and theres no late night bus service on a Sunday,so I wouldn't be able to get home, unless I got a taxi, and that would cost over 100 to get home

Unfortunately I think sundays turnout was a factor in the decision. I reckon there were about 60-70 there max. At one point circa 10 oclock there was about 50. Thats out of 180 so you can imagine it was disappointing. Its all down to timing i would say. Easter just didnt suit alot of folks and no trains also didnt help. However, the music was still great and those there enjoyed themselves including myself. I did feel for Cecil and Andy though. Fair play to them, they still put on a great night.
