Hiya gang!

Does anyone out there, by any chance, know if there is a Video of the Self Aid concert from the 80s?  I'm not sure if one was ever, actually, done but maybe there was!?

Don't think so Bruns.

A double album/cassette came out alright.

May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

Sure BR,

I gave it to you as part of a thank you present for all the work you have done for me putting vinyl onto CD.

I knew it was going into safe hands and now you maybe can help Bruns out.

Never thought I'd see a post relating to up but as they say what goes around comes around.

Must be physic

You're a good man Finno!    The reason I asked actually is that there is a guy who works in our place and he was at that gig and the camera shows him and his mates at the front of the crowd during the "Cactus World News" set.  He had videod the show but recently he was converting his videos to DVD and he discovered that someone had copied over it!!  He says he has tried everything, even RTE archives but they cant help because of copyright issues.  Anyway, I promised him that I'd ask around - kinda figured there wasnt anything like what he wants out there!  Cheers!

I was at that gig with a friend from Galway - it was fantastic, never knew that it came out at all on tape/vinyl.     The only one that was crap was Van the Man - he insisted on playing only the stuff off an album that wasn't even released at the time.   He got pissed off with the crowd and left his set early.    Paul Brady and In Tua Nua were really good as were the Boomtown Rats and Rolo would have loved Christy Burke    Do I remember something about the Blades refusing to play ?     God we were a sad lot back in the 80's if we were reduced to Self Aid to promote employment.    Or maybe we now need a Self Aid 2............

Loads of good Self Aid Clips up on You Tube. Just search "Self Aid"!

My favourites on the day were the gorgeous Lesley Dowdall (and the brilliant Jack Dublin) with In Tua Nua singing "Somebody to Love" and the Legendary Derek Herbert with Les Enfants singing "90 miles away" ... one of the great lost Dublin Bands. Plus Cactus World News with Frank Kearns on guitar - Frank now runs the excellent SALT studios on the coast road at Sutton and is busy turning my young lad into a Drumming Legend.

As for the Blades (THE best lost Dublin band) I think for political reasons they played an alternative charity gig the same day which if I remember rightly was at Liberty Hall !!!???

My last memory was that Chris de Burgh got bottled off the stage which should keep a few of his fans on this site happy ..

Been hunting down the CWN Self Aid stuff myself with little or no luck. Loved Cactus World News, got the Urban Beaches and No Shelter remasters last year.

They don't make em like this anymore. :(

Thanks for that.
I have the audio of The Bridge. McEvoy's vocals sound terrible on Worlds Apart. Did Kearn's guitar cut out on him halfway through the set?

Kearns is still going in Howth making a mint by providing guitar lessons. Few guitarists i knew couldn't recommend him enough. I've heard he got rid of that Bono mullet too.

Found this one also:

Frank is a really lovely guy. His studio is beside Falks Lighting on the Coast Road.

http://www.saltrecordingstudio.com/

As well as a Rock School its also a working studio, Sinead O'Connor and others use it from time to time. The kids that study guitar, drums etc there carry on the spirit of the Grove in their own way, they even look like little Grovers. Long hair, tight jeans, bit of attitude, the works!

My 12 yr old lad is a budding Keith Moon and Frank and his staff have injected a love and passion for music into him all the kids that go there. Cant recommend it highly enough.

Kept meaning to take a trip over there when i was 21 to get a few lessons. Guitars and myself don't mix. I'm a bass man, always have been i guess. It's my comfort zone, i guess.
