Wasnt it in "So Long and thanks for all the fish" by Douglas Adams that he referred to "Donothing* the non-wonder dog, who didnt know which 1 out of 10 dogfoods it was supposed to prefer, despite the fact that 9 of them were covered in engine oil!".  Always made me laugh, that one!

*cant remember the dogs exact name but I think it was that.
