Hi,
I just thought I would give "Sing Out" a mention. Anyone who went to Manor House or St Paul´s from the early 70´s to the late 80´s when it was scrapped ( due to the excess partying that came with it ), would know what I am talking about. I totally associate The Grove with Sing Out and vice versa and both had one thing in common - many met their future hubbie or missus at either or, my good self included. I would be interested on any thoughts or memories regarding Sing Out etc....I am sure there are enough around to merit its own Website. God, them really were the days !!!!. I remember the Sing Out "socials" in both Pauls and Manor House. Were fairly enjoyable but I dont have any *great* memories of them, I'm sad to say. Welcome to the addiction, sorry I mean site, Mins!

Yes there is another topic on this forum under memory lane I think. I went to Manor house and used to go to the socials and even tried out for the singout. My big memory is the St. Pauls socials though - I really associate the grove with them. It was almost like a junior grove.

Hey Mins! Yeah, I loved the song "Two pints and a packet of crisps please" just for its sheer novelty/comedy value. Have the single over in the press beside me - there's actually two songs on the B side. The one you mentioned "Simon Templar" and another called (bizarrely enough) Michael Booths talking bum!! We used to play it at drinking sessions when people were very drunk, always got a laugh!. Edited by Brunswick |

T, were the singout socials in "Pauls" held in a place called the 'GP' room do you recall? I know I went to a good few dances in Pauls -singout certainly stands out but I remember a few 4th/5th yr discos run by the school too. Friday nights I remember well, with flashing lights up the top of the room. The songs/atmosphere were, like you say, like a junior grove. |

Yes I believe so Mel - it was when you came in the back door and then walked down a hall - it was at the end I remember. Loved those socials and did some film appreciation course there also back in the day. You are correct with the flashing lights also.

Guys,
Just reading this thread - - the GP room - - singout a big part of my life and yes singout and grove intermingled.
Do you remember Sr. Elenor and Fr. McCann - - now grove songs - - up up with people. The singout band - - the hanratty's? I was one of the dancers in singout 75 - even still have the program - memory jogger - - 'don't forget to remember what you forgot - just remember don't forget you've got a lot. and another one:.......it is black, brown yellow it is red and it is white........... cheers Jackie

For Sing Out 1985 we had the Music Teacher from Pauls called Mary Melody !!! Really...and she was helped a little by Ms Higgins the singing teacher from Manor Farm. The Dance Teacher was Billie Barries daughter Lorraine Barry.
Can´t remember which one of the Brothers assisted but do you know who headed the Band...David Hayes....now a very well known Musician. He would have been in 6th year at the time whilst we rehearsed and performed the show during 4th and 5th year. The next time I saw him was when he was with Riverdance at Hammersmith Odeon and of course up I trooped before he shot off and said..remember me from Sing Out..look where it got you !!!!! have to start somewhere as they say. He took over directly from Bill Whelan so talented musician...nice guy too. He agreed that Sing Out was his first major introduction to musical directing. He was good then too. My hubbie was one of the main dancers out front cos not only could throw a few shapes, he had a bit of a Tonto thing going on so looked good. Mise, I was one of 6 holding it together on the mics. Doing the harmonies so I was. It was a fab show, great way to meet guys !!! and the parties...phew... Another guy called Mickey Dolan who never danced before his 15th birthday, got the bug from Sing Out and went on and studied Ballet I think in London !!!. Someone else might know more but that is what I heard anyhow. He seemed to be well known afterwards. We wore kindof Grease type outfits...below the knee skirts that swung high when you twirled, one colour inside and another outside. White sweat shirts with white laced plimsoles worn over skin tights and coloured ankle socks. Bit of a Sandra Dee outfit. Everyone got 2 coloured chiffon scarves to wear whichever way you wished so some did the bandana thing and some the knotted thing. Actually was very nice. Lads wore, even the metal heads, white trousers with white sweatshirts and white trainers. Looked quite handsome and none actually complained at all. Long hair was left long. The ONE good thing about Sing Out was that it was open auditions for the girls as it always was a Pauls thing. Everyone had to learn a dance and then perform a song. Audition twice and then wait. You needed to pass the Dance and the Singing Audtion. They only needed 30 I think. Nearly all of the 180 in the year auditioned. As Manor Farm was quite an academic school there was a HUGE divide between the top two classes and the remaining 4. Sing Out though changed that. More people from the lower classes got recognised for their other talents and there was a huge reversal in how things operated in our year from 4th to 5th year. A lot of the quiet ones came out of their shell and emerged with a lot more confidence..me included. All of a sudden you had people who were almost looked down upon by the snotty heads from the top classes becoming almost equal. Sounds ridiculous but Sing Out changed the way things operated under the bitchy stuck up few. Hard to explain but anyone from Manor Farm might understand what I am trying to say. It was a great achievement for those who got used to being left out or just plain resigned to their fate of maybe never being one of the ones who went anywhere let alone far, after school. My sis was in Sing Out too in 1976. I remember seeing it being performed on Raheny Church steps. We have an old cine film of it..without the sound of course..dinosaur days. I remember the... " Sing, sing, sing..bum, bum, bum, sing, sing, sing.... Up with the People...Sing Out ´76.. Vive a la something, vive les jeunes ".... Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh Memories.....  Edited by Mins |

Ahh memories I remember the show on the steps of the Church I prob did it the year before your sis. - - less of the dinosaur please if you dont' mind - but seriously was great craic. our outfits were purple circle skirts with a bib front and a mauve shirt. The prob was the skirts were full circle so we had to have 'matching dyed knickers'. Also the nuns in MH were a bit upset at what we were showing when we did the dancing (Lorraine's mum - Billy was our dance teacher) so we had to sew in pennies into the hem of the skirt to try to keep them down- prob was that just made them go out further - great craic for the lads.

You know what the year myself and Kay auditioned together they would not take you into the singout unless you were getting top marks in your studies! That was me out anyhow. I could sing and was in all the choirs (booted out many a time) but I had a voice - Sr Elenor wouldn't let poor Kay nor I into it. Auld fecker..... |

Mins, what a great memory. I was never artistic and can only admire those who had talent like you and your colleagues. I was delighted about the equalisation aspect of it. It just goes to show what can happen when you are motivated and feel part of a group/team. I used to be in a TM group in South Africa. The leader told us a story about visiting a school in a township near Johannesburg. The academeic achievements were poor by any standards. As a experiment they introduced TM to the pupils and teachers. Each morning they would spend 30 minutes meditating and within a few months the performance increased by 30-50%. As far as I know they have continued to improve and have rolled it out to other, but not all, schools.

Can´t believe that....she was something else that one... she used to pick on people in my RE class that she THOUGHT hung around with messers... she actually didn´t wait for them to make trouble, just assumed they might so reprimanded them before they actually DID anything and put them on the blacklist....RIDICULOUS. Your story evokes another memory I have. In 6th year when it was time to vote for the Prefects and the Headgirl..The Principal and the VP and God knows who looked at the votes and vetoed a lot of them with the argument that some of the girls might become TOO distracted with their new status as prefects and it would ultimately affect their Leaving Cert Results. So against the wishes of the 180 or so 6th years, the "suits" basically let who they wanted in and fecked out those they didn´t want in. Was it ANY coincidence AGAIN that these unfortunate few were NOT from the top two classes ...... At least with Sing Out there was some sort of justice cos outsiders were involved so even though there was a lot of tears shed over the Prefect thing, we at least scored a biggie with Sing Out. I would love to see it brought back for the lads and lassies of 15 and 16 again...nothing like being in a show at that age to get everything stirring and mixing, temperatures rising, adrenaline pumping with the sheer happiness of putting together a show thats fast, slick and great for the parents to watch. I would love to see my kids in a Sing Out. I´ll never forget it..in fact I haven´t. I still remember remember the songs although the hubbie refuses to do the wee dances even when I promise all sorts

lol it never mattered much after that but I was so upset that I did not get in at the time. Ah well went on to study vocal training at the college of music night time branch and it never did me a bit of harm - still enjoyed the socials. love to sing in the shower now! ps: I was a messer so that was me barred for life... still am Edited by eejit91 |
