    Posted: 07-October-2006 at 17:18

How about a new thread about the first night you experienced the grove ? Why did you go ? what were your first impressions ? Well, to start off I will go first. The reason I went was that a group of lads from school were heading down and one of them thought my musical tastes might suit. It was a Friday night before xmas '88 - I think xmas eve was the saturday, so they moved it forward one night. I just remember arriving and noticing the red lights and how dark everything seemed. The first song was Waterboys 'Whole of the Moon' and then I remember 'Wild Flower' by The Cult. Thats when I experienced the first mosh and whenever I hear Wild Flower think of a fellow Cult head who was mosh surfing to the song. Only a couple of songs in and I knew I'd be back !

Good...

Except I can't remember exactly the first time I went.. well not down to the actual songs.. or exact date..

But I can do groups - Waterboy's, Smiths, Cult, Ram Jam, Led Zep. Oh remember Climie Fisher.! And the slow set I think had I think Richard Marx's "Right Here Waiting For you" as it was the big song around the time. Oh wait that was in 89..

Also I think Shakespear's Sister's History. And defo the Cure's In-Between Days, Joy Divisions' LWTUA, Pixies's Debaser.

First mosh - Black Betty! Defo!Btw did ya go to The Cult? Didn't they rock!!!!!!

Btw you'll have to throw a few more posts up and get into the private section.. ya only need another 17!

Come on, Mrs R Smith's there & Shay G - and we were all Groving at the same time..

PSt Mrs R Smith's a curehead - so come on, I need back up against all the rockers!

I dj for a goth-industrial-alternative club called Dominion. It's in the cellar bar of Frazers (was called McGraths upto 99) on O'Connell St. The url is http://dominion.gothic.ie/

Now it's goth mind.. but the music has changed over the years.

It music goes from the ethereal (think Enya & Clannad type) to 80's classic hits (new-wave, Smiths, Soft Cell etc) to trad gothic rock (Sisters Of Mercy, Cult, The Mission etc) to indie (eg Placebo, Pixies) to some punk to industrial to EBM (eg Front 242, Nitzer Ebb to VNV) and some futurepop (Covenant) in there too.

The industrial scene has expanded or rather exploded to encompass aspects of techno and power noise..

So there's something for everyone.. except for the rockers looking for Van Halen, Lynard Skinnard, Rainbow, Boston etc..

Though saying that, I do have them, just don't play it..

Yet I did get away with Guns'n'Roses Paradise City and Alice Cooper's Poison does go down well!

would play those two ..stripes hotel yorba always heavy request as are the like of last night by the strokes ..bandon just seemed to be starved of any alternative music till i started dropping them into what had been 4 years a very commercial set as i was a club / pub / mobile dj for parties and held a few club residencies too.

now i tend to try holding of the classics till 11ish so i can rock the last 2 hrs

I know what you mean about holding off the classics.. Combichrist's "The Sh**t Will F***K You Up would be one for us. Same as the big goth rock and 80's..

Btw this is going off topic. Sorry Sister1! Back on topic (ish), no don't remember first time there - but went to the Grove with girls from St.Mary's Glasnevin. Also went with a few ex-Vinnies lads when I was repeating the Leaving in Beneavin. As yer a local lad Sister1, I betcha we know people!

But I do remember going into school the day after one Sat in the Comp- saw one of the blokes in my class at the Grove and he was surprised.. and they all asked me about it and didn't think I would be the type. A little did he know - I had been there before and also I was into the music..

He was a Sisters fan too - actually I had a crush on him. God I hope he's not here reading this! Yikes!

Btw in the same school there were posters for a Tower Of Babel gig in the religion room. The teacher thought it was a religious thing! Didn't get to seem them alas.. but did get to see Babylon The Bride. Remember them? House of Byron broke up before I also got to see them.. but I know one of the guy's (Brian) brother Phil. He drums for the Joy Division tribute band http://www.joydivision.info/ and I'm not sure if it's Uber or Jimmy Cake. And I used to er go out with a guy (also ex-Grover) but he's ex waaaaayyyyy before me was the sister of Brian & Phil.

Actually seeing as er I'm off topic - did anyone got to Badlands in Mcgonagles (my ole club)? Or Badlands in Mulligans? Or Fetish? The Olympic?

Just wondering as a few ex-Grovers used to go them - DC89-91 remembers a few of the mates that did. I think.. I'd have to check back.. actually This Burning Effigy played a gig in Mulligans..

Ok, speaking of TBE - here's a fan based site. I was emailed it by the guy compiling it..
http://www.crepuscle.com/thisburningeffigy/ You do know that Julianne Regan ex All About Eve contributed to a few tracks don't ya? Julianne is sweet - she's a friend of a friend of mine.

Stee still lives in London and plays now in Adoration

And NFD - http://www.myspace.com/nfdworld hence the Nephs link. Mr Tony Pettit is in the band..

Btw I met Tony at the Bauhaus gig here in Jan - he flew into Dublin to see them especially.. he's a nice guy actually! And I know what he does for a living and you wouldn't believe it!

Ok lads, I'm outta here.. and leave ya to get back on topic!

P.S Some radio station I've got on is playing Stairway to Heaven right now! Ah the memories!

Btw lads - here's a thread I started some months ago on my memories of the Grove

There is another bloke from our era Sister1 et al - Garbhan - Garvan. He went with a crowd of guys from Vinnies..
He contacted me through my myspace thingie back in May as he thought he knew people I know. He currently lives in Brisbane with his other half.
I tried to contact him about the Docu and the fact that the site here has exploded and lots more of our era are here now.  I have pm'd him from here aswell but alas none of the messages are collected and the myspace one's delete my side within 14 days..

So Gavan, if yer reading - I did try and contact ya and come back here and post yer memories! We are all doing it..

Nice topic Sister1

I went to the Grove firstl time in July 1972.

I went because a friend went before me and said the music was great and the place was real hip, that was the Old Grove.

First song I remember was "Take it Easy" by the Eagles. This was being played as I  pulled up outside on my motorbike for the first time there.

Was blown away but nervous when I went inside first time.

May be going to hell in a bucket but at least I'm enjoying the ride.

My first experience of the grove.....was very short.... we had to get two buses to the grove so we only arrived in St Paul's around 10pm and my friends dad was collecting us at 12 ....so like cinderella we had to go home just as it was getting warmed up in the hall.....but in those two short hours we had found our paradise....and never looked back

My First Grove Experience.....

Can't go there now. Just lets say it was a learning experience. Lets just say I was lead astray by an older girl ... Damn I was so shy then

Oh and the music was great.

I'm definitely old....all I can recall is we went very early to make sure we got in and found it a bit intimidating at first as the hall just had one ring of guys headbanging in the middle. Almost felt we had to hang around in corridor or we'd be intruding....no idea what was playing.

Damn those fading braincells...I feel I only have about 3 left.....headbanging at the reunion should kill them right off!

p.s. we need a headbanging emoticon!!!! Anyone?
