My fav. songs from the Grove were; The Quiet Life - Japan; A Forest - The Cure; Will You - Hazel O'Connor; Rock Lobster - The B52's (I used to mosh on the outskirts of the mob to Rock Lobster as I lost several earrings in the commotion)

Everytime I hear Santana or The Zombies "She's Not
There", it brings me right back. I remember that
single red light in the hall. I remember walking the
corridor with all the goths lining the walls with their
silly hair styles and pale faces!
But the one that really does it for me is Cyndi
Lauper's "True Colours", every single time I hear that
song, be it in a shop or in the car or at home, I'm
transported back to St. Pauls gymnasium, into the
arms of the boy who was the first person to ask me
for a dance at the Grove. I remember it so well. The
smell of his Suede coat, his hair, it was infactuation
at first sight! Just waiting for him to kiss me. The
small talk. More small talk. And eventually he kissed
me- just as the last chorus of True Colours kicked in.
Then "Lola" came along and ruined everything for us.
And that was it. We never danced again... Maybe
he'll be at the Grove Christmas special?!

Was it Blue Monday that everybody did that ridiculous dance to?

Posted By: crusty
Date Posted: 21-January-2005 at 15:38
I think that was rock lobster or maybe it was Blue
Monday. I know that they definitely did a stupid dance
to Rock Lobster! How annoying. And as for those
goth/ cure-head dances - circling round with one arm
half in the air and your head stuck to the opposite
shoulder as if you had an earring caught in the top
of your geansai!
Those were the days...

For me it would have to be The Mission's "Wasteland" (used to start the night going for the non-headbangers!), Brian Kennedy's "Captured" (fave slow song at the Grove), The Cult's "She Sells Sanctuary" and The Sister's of Mercy (which wasn't played at the Christmas Bash!).

Rock Lobster was great but there always seemed to be loads moshing when others were doing the 'arse' dance on the floor. Recipe for Disaster!

Was Brian Kennedy ever played at The Grove????

Posted By: jenimcc
Date Posted: 07-February-2005 at 09:09

He was indeed. Reason I remember is that I went out with a guy for a year while going to the Grove and that was 'our' song (puke!).

I believe Brian Kennedy got the slaps from the Harmo crew outside the grove if that helps any!!

cheap track - the flame. that was the ultimate slow-set tune i think. didn't know till recent years it was by cheap trick though. robin zander has an incredible voice. plus tom peterson co-invented the 12 string bass. a mind of useless information.... or something.

Date Posted: 19-July-2005 at 16:44

First post here, didnt know there was a site dedicated to the Grove! So many memories from there! Some that spring to mind would be any of the Smiths or Morrissey tracks that we annoyed Cecil with until he played. Also REM - Stand, I think that one had a special dance to it! Also a Faith no More track? Rock Lobster and others mentioned already. Slow set wise, Stairway to Heaven stands out.

Favourite songs that I can remember are Eric Clapton - Wonderful tonight, and of course, Stairway to Heaven - ah those were the days!!!!

Other fav. songs Rainbow - Since you've been gone - The Jam - Going Underground & A Town called Malice - 10cc -I'm not in Love - Lynerd Skynerd (I never could spell his name!!) - Freebird, The Doors - Riders on the Storm - the list goes on and on!!

Poor Cecil tried to play Paradise City by Guns & Roses when it was released, all you had to hear was the opening strains on Slash's guitar and girlfriedns were abandoned mid snog on the bicycle racks. Everyone and I mean everyone would congregate on the floor and start moshing. It would get so out of hand that he would have to stop playing it half way through... I wonder did he ever get to play it the end???

A strange mix of songs stick in the mind: Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Sweet Home Alabama', Talking Head's 'Psycho Killer', even the (all to brief) resurrection of the Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" in the late '80s. I think though that Cecil must've been paid off by Joe the St Paul's cleaner to play the B-52's "Rock Lobster" as it really cleaned all those cigarette buts from the floor for him. I'm sure people will say X or Y wasn't a Grove song but 30 years probably means that there'll be one huge musical anthropology to unfold on this thread.

After all it's an oral history -  no cameraphones then and no-one sober enough to have used anything either. And I know some girls used to frown about the rare-blue-vinyl-gatefold-edition tendencies of some of the lads, but at the time MTV Europe was relatively new and 120 Minutes (for the indie, goth, alternative scene) and Headbanger's Ball (for the mainstream metal) were still only blips on the musical radar screen: much musical interest and activity was a shared one at the Grove.

I suppose that fragmentation of music and commodification into ring-tones and so on will probably prevent anything similar to the Grove ever evolving again but as a historical part of Dublin's socio-cultural history I think it's something worth commemorating. List those favourite songs here ...

Not necessarily my favourite, but Lola by The Kinks
was a classic. It was the first place I heard the song,
it always used to signify the end of the slow set
during my era. You'd be just about to go in for the kill
(well, your hands were), then Cecil would play that
blasted song, ah well, let's see if we can make it out
to the compound or maybe find a free seat in some
dark corner...Everytime I hear it, it will always bring
me back, without fail.

I reckon "Since You been gone" by Rainbow will always be the song I remember when I think of the Grove, probably because I dont think I've ever heard it anywhere else. Love that song!

Yeah Since you've been gone will ALWAYS remind me of the grove alright, every time, that and dexy's midnight runners - come on Eileen, without fail that one always brings me back....

Mine would have to be Lay La, Eric Clapton. and for the slow set Angie.  And dont for get the AC/DC numbers and our air guitars my neck would be in bits the next morning from head banging.

I've just discovered this online radio station in the UK called Planet Rock Radio ( http://www.planetrock.com - www.planetrock.com ) and you'd swear they asked Cecil to write the playlist.  The website itself is dreadful, but the music is great....they've just gone from Riders On The Storm by The Doors, to Knockin on Heaven's Door by GnR to She's Not There by The Zombies in the last 15 mins....

I just loved Joan Armatrading - Love & Affection, Crosby Stills & Nash - our house, Pink Floyd-Us & Them, Clifford T Ward - Home Thoughts From Abroad, Blue Oyster Cult - Don't Fear the Reaper, Jackson Brown - Stay, Supertramp - Dreamer.

Nothing like being asked to dance to Stair Way To Heaven by the one you were eyeing up for weeks! Then relaying the stories to your friends the next day - yeah he was a great kisser...

another one to add to the list - Dreamer - Supertramp - - I'd Cecil plagued to play it each sat. - - p.s. reminder to make sure crusty has it for next reunion!

Posted By: eejit91

Jackie I could not make the reunion as live in the US but did send a request for them to play dreamer! how could you have a grove reunion and not play "Dreamer"...  that's a sin

Not sure if you were there on Sun.night or if so what time you arrived at,but Dreamer was definitely played.

Reckon it was about ten thirtyish.

Of course I was there on Sunday - And here's me thinking everyone would now remember me - - I was the one that asked Cecil up to dance first - - well there you go - -anyway must have been in the loo or outside but didn't hear Dreamer - will take your word that it was played so all forgiven.  It's still a great song - together with Freebird (another FAGAN favourite!)

Posted By: crusty
Date Posted: 01-November-2005 at 17:31
Yeah, you see, we've 30 years of music to get through in five and a half
hours. So that means if you're late down you'll miss songs, and the later you
are the more songs you'll miss. Yes, we did play "Dreamer" by Supertramp
both this reunion and the last one. And unfortunately with 30 years of music
to get through, if we've already played a song once in the night, we
definitely won't be playing it a second time, not for anyone. So the only way
to ensure that you'll hear your favourite Grove songs is to get there at
7.30pm.
Glad that everyone had such a great night on Sunday. It was a magic
occassion! Look forward to the next one!

I did my time at the grove in the early '90s so I vividly remember the carnage during 'Smells like teen spirit' and 'Enter Sandman' (especially the torch in the back of the head when things got a bit rough. Did all the bouncers have moustaches?).

Another favourite was Depeche Mode's 'Just can't get enough' where we all shouted SEX at the chorus despite the vast majority of us never havin gotten any! I used to love the dance during REM's 'Stand' despite always getting it wrong, those 4 Bud for £4 beforehand didn't do me any favours - anyone remember how that dance went? (haven't been to a reunion night so don't know if people do it there)

I was never a fan of the rock lobster though, although I did always place my arse down when it came on but that was in the hope of being beside some girl, any girl!

The Grove is still the only place ever that I have heard Rainbow's 'Since you've been gone' or Air Supply's 'All out of Love'. Classics! Someone should put out a CD with all the best songs on it although copyright would be a problem

Anyone remember King of the Fairies? Hold each others hands tightly (usually the opposite sex), and start spinning each other around. Lock eyes, and feel the force! usually centrifugal as you lost your grip and went flying backwards! No major injuries that I can remember, but I usually did it pissed...

Was that King of The Fairies by Horslips ?

There's a name I haven't heard in a while.

My first big gig was Horslips in the Stadium, think it was '78,I was only a kid ,about 14 and it blew me away.

Don't remember the dance though, must be too young.

That's terrible! I remember taking the whiskey out of the cabinet at home and filling it up with water, then my dad and Tommy Ryan (Ita's dad) would sit down for a few.... with watery whiskey - the lads always got the blame, never looked like a suspect!!!

Now the question arises why the hell I would take Whiskey as I could never get the stuff past the back of my throat before throwing up!!!! I remember getting the bulmers - yuck or pilsner blow the bloody head off ya!  Do you remember going into the Flowin Tide!!!! Vodka & Lime - kitchen cleaner sounds like.....uhhhh " type="#_x0000_t75">Dead

Yeah but what about Grove songs you hated. No way " I Will Survive " or the Cake Song ( MacArthur Park ) were ever played, while I do remember cringing every time that idiot De Burgh was inflicted on us.

I think it would be great if there was a CD released with the all time best (favourite) Grove songs.  It could be a double cd with, one cd comprising of songs from the slow set and the other cd the rowdier songs.  I think it would be really popular and money from the sale of the cd could go to charity.  I would certainly buy it and I know loads of other ex grove heads who would buy it too.  We all have songs that you might hear once in a blue moon on the radio that take you right back to the grove days.  It would be good to have them on a cd to reminisce.  You could have a poll on the website and people could vote their top five songs and the most popular could go on the cd.

Tara you should pm Killian with that idea or crusty.... I would certainly buy it also and I think the bigger drive would be that the proceeds go to charity! I second that absolutely.

Great idea!Big smile

Thanks,

There was so many good songs played, but there was also some bloody awful songs played too. I started to go to the Grove in 1989 and remember the first time I went thinking I had stepped into 'Heaven'. All those longhaired fellas (which I still have a thing for) and great songs, some of which I had never heard before. It was my 1960'flower power era. The funny thing now is I am back every Monday night in St Paul's as my son is in a club that meets there every Monday night. The hall still looks the same but the corridor doesn't look quite as appealing as it did back in 1989/1990.

Tara

you are so right that idea would go down very well and all for charity i would buy it for sure

Must say i find myself rooting out my old cds from that era alot these days or downloading the music and its a real feel good factor

Must say my most hated song from the grove was.."come on eileen" the dexy midnight runners jeez i hated it still cringe today when i hear it deffo not one ive downloaded or had in my collection..lol

Maybe for ur idea they could record a reunion nite and at the next one sell the cds im sure loads would buy them as there'ld be a good mixture of old grove songs

Think someone mentioned that plan before but the question of copyright raised its ugly head.

Haven't a clue what the implications would be but reckon there would be issues of some sort or other.

Pity though, it would be a great plan.

Still love the idea of people voting for their top five songs. I'd love to see what the overall favourites were.

Killian get your thinking cap on.

CD idea is great. You'd need more than a double CD. I could see a series of CD's coming out.

You're talking 30 years here and I could fill 10 CD's from  1967 to 1973 alone.

By the way I'm growing the hair long again and I'll be around to pick ya up on my hog and we'll hit the road when the breeze in our faces and Steppenwolf's  "Born to be Wild" ringing in our ears.    Wink

It's crap if the copyright issue get's in the way. Surely there must be something that can be done. There must be somebody that can pull a few strings for us. Is there anybody out there who went to the Grove and is very influential now!!!!!

I know that the IMRO Gestapo regularly patrol Irish websites to threaten litigation at even the slightest hint of creativity but here's a suggestion: have various bands record versions of the songs.

That would allow:

(A) Control of content -  e.g. most ex-Grovers would prefer a Santana sound to that of the Zombies for "She's not there"

(B) Payment of royalties to the relevant companies (which can sometimes be waived if it's for charity). Don't forget that the original recording artist has no control on the use of their own music - the record companies will allow you to record a Scissors Sisters sound to Motorhead's "Ace of Spades" if you're willing to pay sufficient royalties. (You see many grumpy artists moan all the time when their music appears on 'Best of' compilations)

The only problem is finding decent bands to record Grove music: most young men would look at you with a slightly nervous stare and start edging backwards towards the door if you were to mention terms such as "guitar-based" sound: random fiddling with electronic equipment appears to be the extent of the capabilities of many 'live' performers. And how many karaokes before we find our female vocals?

Still though, after 30 years of music it wouldn't be that difficult to conduct a series of polls on the site and produce a playlist (even if you hated particular songs I suppose if they were part of the repetoire then they'd need a place on the album). Would really need Cecil to come on board.

Just my €0.02

Hi Guys, apologies for my lack of presence over the last 3 months, but I'm back from my Southeast Asian tour now. I'll get on the case regarding the possibility of compiling a "Grove" CD(s). I thought about this idea a few years ago when I realised that there was still such a fire blazing in the heart of many ex-Grovers, but was put off by the amount of work involved regarding clearance and copyright. But since then I've been involved in putting together two compilation CDs, one of originals and one of covers. If Tom Dunne can do it, I'm sure we can!

Crusty I think you need to do more of a double cd compilation...
Maybe 20 full of Mp3 CDs would be better.
We could buy an old Van with no Reg plates from the knackers Yard and park it outside the Sheiling and sell the Cds off as the Grovers come out
You won't have to worry about Copyright crap lol

Yeah, that thought had crossed my mind, Black Russian, but knowing my luck I'd be reefed before I even opened the car boot!

Southeast Asia? We flew into Singapore for a couple of days (primarily to purchase a half price video camera to document the rest of the travels), then we flew up to Hanoi, North Vietnam. From there we trained and bussed our way south, then into Cambodia, up through Laos to the Golden Triangle and Northern Thailand. Then we made our way south and into Malaysia, and back up into Southern Thailand where we spent the last month island hopping on the west coast. It was a life changing experience, especially Cambodia and Laos. We went scuba-diving, snorkelling, trekking, sampled many fine national beers - I even petted a fully grown tiger!!! Which looking back, maybe wasn't such a smart thing to do, but at the time...

If the opportunity ever arises for any of you, grab it with both hands. Even to go to the Thai Islands - Ko Phi Phi, Ko Lanta, Ko Lippeh, etc. for a couple of weeks, if you're interested in doing something that little bit different, beats any of the standard Irish destinations - Greece, Spain, Canarys... and the price you pay for the flights you more than compensate for when you're there, as living is so cheap. It would work out the same if not cheaper! Beautiful people, beautiful environment! I'm even working on bringing a Thai rock covers band over to do a small Irish tour (including one Grove Night). They play all the classics - Metallica, Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Motorhead, Pearl Jam, Dio, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Maiden etc. - and they do it well!

Have you been to that neck of the woods yourself Pat?

Crusty,

I discovered Thailand in '92 and go back there every year.

The Far East is where its at. I used to work in Aer Lingus and have travelled extensively but Thailand  just changed  my whole direction in holidaying.

The rock music from the old days gets played everywhere. I have a bar in Bangkok that when I go in the man Dom puts on Creedence Clearwater Revival immediately for me. Jaysus, I've air guitared in that bar a lot over the years, usually with a broom smiley12

Last trip I brought my own CD's and was allowed do DJ (no mike) in a pool bar in Bangkok for a few nights. No big deal but I met so many people who were into the music, it was a real blast.

The Cecil of the Orientsmiley2

The whole pace of life, attitude, prices, food, weather. Hey, I'm hooked.

Already booked to return 17 Dec 06.

I'm lucky, my wife is Thai. We met in Wales. Her sister works here in Co Clare for a friend of mine who has a hotel chain and we got introduced and the rest as they say is history.

It makes discovering Thailand and it's cultures etc.. so much easier.

I plan over time to hit Laos/Cambodia etc..

And my advice to all other forum folks is to head east if you get the chance.

Crusty is not exaggerating.
