Hi all, I just met Paddy, ex barman/manager of the Nep - he hasn't changed a bit in 20 years!! He remembers everyone talking about the Grove & says hi to all. He'd put it on the telly if he still worked there! CP.

Hey just wondering.... for all you guys who had the private viewing of the documentary. Is there much video footage of the grove in the early years (70's) or is it just of the reunions today.?

No I don't think their was any footage from the Grove days but their was laods of photographs from the Grove... You are in for a treat...
Bluey see if you can get a lend of the out take DVD and we copy it
|

I'm sure once the documentary has been shown on tv...it would be no problem with the out-take copy that I have. I could copy it and give it to you at the next reunion. But remember it's only 10mins and it's mostly out-takes of our gang making a show of ourselves. It's a friends cousin who works for them so she only took the out-takes of the footage of us......hope it's all the footage and that none of us made it into the final cut....cos I know how silly I look although it was a brilliant night....roll on Oct.

I've seen the ad on TV tonight - just after this weeks True Lives.
Reminder has been put into my mobie as these days I'm likely forget it and if I don't, I won't have a video set ready to go.
I haven't got a dvd recorder just yet.

TRUE LIVES
Series Archive Prog. 1 Prog. 2 Prog. 3 RTÉ One, Tuesday 10.15pm
This Week
'The Grove: More than a Feeling' looks back at the 30 years of a northside Dublin institution - The Grove disco - which ran from 1967 to 1997.
From its inception in Belgrove Football Club, through the fire which razed it to the ground and on to the 'New Grove' in St. Paul's, Raheny; this disco was central to the lives of local teenagers for three decades.
'The Grove: More than a feeling' explores - through the retrospective accounts of the former teenagers who went there - the changes that took place over three decades, fuelled by a soundtrack of the music that shaped those memories.
The Grove was more than a disco; it was a rite of passage - a place that marked a point of maturity in the life of a teenager of the area; where many had their first kiss, found their first love or perhaps experienced their first heartbreak.
Told through the eyes of 'Grovers' from different generations, from those who attended the original Grove in Belgrove in the 60's to those who frequented St. Paul's in the 90's. Some well known faces such as RTÉ 2 FM's Marty Whelan, News presenter Eileen Dunne and comedian Brendan Bourke recall their personal experiences and describe why the Grove was so special to them. We also hear from a couple who met first met at the Grove and went on to marry and from other Grovers who candidly recall their memories of the famous disco, from the drinking beforehand to what happened when couples went to 'the compound' outside. But one man is acknowledged by all the Grovers as the unifying force- DJ, Cecil Nolan. Described as 'our John Peel', Cecil is revered and respected by all who went there for three decades.
While others were dancing to Abba or Bros, Cecil was introducing Northside teenagers to the likes of Leonard Cohen, Deep Purple and The Cure. This environment provided a place where teenagers could freely express themselves, whether it was as Cureheads, Goths, Mods or Rockers and has had a lasting influence on those who went there.
In this programme Cecil also recalls his memories of 'The Grove' from the vantage point of the DJ box and why his love of music drove him to preside over the disco for thrity years.
I wonder who these 2 are
And we all know who this is

Could one of you please please make a copy for me ( I do actually have a dvd) I'll willing send on a few blank dvd's in exchange or pay any costs involved

Hi All...
This is my first post in the forum.. been reading through for a while and is really great to read about the memories and recollections of The Grove. I went there in the late 70's to mid 80's till marriage, mortgages, kids and grey hairs took me away ;-) I've been to two re-unions so far and like most of the posters say, was great to see a room full of people moshing and headbanging and enjoying good music..and not a flying fist to be seen..well..at least not in anger anyway..*g*
I haven't seen the documentary yet but have it taped to watch over the next few days..
I'll have my finger hovering over the still pause button... ;-)
Anyway..that's my first post out of the way...nice to meet you all and long may this site run...

Btw who was the Curehead that was interviewed?
His face looks familiar - and before ya think it, I don't think it was by doing anything untoward..
Btw just to let ye know on the activity - I got email notifications on some of the threads (not all mind) and 164 posts were made so far since er 1.20 this morning!
Way to go - busiest message board I've been on in ages!

Hypothetical question right!!
If some imaginary person had the show on DVD and ripped it to his..or
her.. imaginary PC ...would he be able to load the Docu up on to
YouTube or Google Video so that it was available to watch online?
I know i've watched full movies on You Tube and Google..not quite as good as on the TV..but hey...it's quick...?
Just a hypothetical question of course

Was talking with Joe McElwaine the director and he told me the viewing figures for the documentary was 290,000.
That's some audience.
Now Cecil is seriously nationwide

Folks,
My landline rang tonight, which is rare as everyone rings me on my mobile.
So I pick it up and there's this guy on the phone.
Says he's Ken Heritage. He saw the doc and he's in one of the photos I gave for inclusion in the programme. Taken back in 1975 in Kilmuckridge when we all went camping on our motorbikes.
Well I haven't seen or spoken to Ken in 25 years but he went to the trouble of tracking me down and hey we're going to meet up again sometime. He lives in Roscommon.
We spent ages talking about our times together in the Grove '72-'74, we were pals back then.
There was a gang of about 10 of us who hung out together but we all scattered to the winds over time. So it was great to hear from Ken.
Now there's the power of the Grove.
Also another story I'd like to share with you all.
In the documentary I mention my friend Joe McKeown (RIP). It was with Joe I first saw Easy Rider and we both got motorbikes as a result of that movie and we both went to the Grove together.
Well Joe's brother rang me last night to thank me for the mention of Joe and told me that old friends of Joe's , whom I didn't know, had contacted him and were so happy that Joe's memory is still alive and shown in the doc.
God bless you Joe and God bless Cecil and The Grove and how the documentary is bringing so many people back together again.

nice one pat - from someone whos lost family it great when they are remembered by non family if you know what I mean. You did us all proud on the doc!!
Also, there were nearly 30 new members registered yesterday alone, and some of them I know from the grove, its great to get back in touch with them.

Thanks Lenny and Elvira.
That why this documentary was so special, it's the effect its having behind the scenes.
Like my stories and Lenny getting in touch with people again.
