Topic: SUPERGROUPS OF ROCKPosted: 12-January-2008 at 22:43 |

Just watched a Queen concert with Paul Rodgers filling in for Freddie Mercury. Reminded me of both what a great band Queen were and also what a voice Rodgers had - in my view the best rock voice ever. It got me to thinking about what if you could choose any 4-5 singers/musicians to make up a supergroup - who would I choose? Then I put an extra restriction on myself that I can't choose 2 people from the same band. So here's my opening selection comprising with plenty of options on back up vocals: Paul Rodgers, Eric Clapton, Michael Schenker, Phil Lynott, Don Henley I would be interested in other peoples selections

My tuppence worth with supergoups is the ones made the rock genre really were supergroups. They made rock music. I thnk myself (being a prog fan) that in terms of technicalities Rush and maybe ELP are/were the most technical with their playing and their timing. Neil Peart must the most advanced drummer I've heard. I think the style of prog (for me) is moulded on the keyboard riffs heard on many a Yes/Genesis/Rush album. Zep were truly the purest rock players, making true rock music at it's best.and made a bloody good go of the folk style also. It's the combination of the writing, the playing (in particular Jones and Page) and the vocals which made everything they've done unique. That hard English rock born from the 'NWOBHM' (a term coined by a hack in NME meaning the New Wave of British Heavy Metal) such as Purple,Sabbath etc and later Whitesnake,Maiden,AC/DC (although not English) shook the cobwebs off a lot of the Prog and Glam in the 70's. I find it a rush to listen to-very high energy, strong vocal screams, killer riffs, hard drum back beats and often distorted bass lines (Smoke on the Water?) seems to lift and carry the listener. It's loud, ballsy, riffy,'guitary' and really gets into you-especially live. Even Queen and U2,not hard rock groups but still Supergroups, have made such a mark that you can't ignore their body of work. Very few supergroups still with us,and probably no new group now will achieve that status, but we should be very thankful for the supergroups of the past-long may they live. My fantasy supergroup? Ian Gillan and Bruce Dickinson singing with a band with Brian May,Roger Glover,Rick Wakeman and Brian Downey-one of Rocks most underrated drummers.

Good man Arty, good topic. Very difficult to make a definitive selection on the basis that we will never know if the sounds would complement one another or be a total disaster. But sure............we'll try anyway. Jim Morrison,Jimmy Page,Paul Kossoff,Neil Peart and Philo ( No doubt there are plenty of superior exponents of the art, but Philo is Philo and will do for me !)

What, you mean part of Rainbow??? One of the most shared family tress is the Deep Purple People. Offshoots obviously include Whitesnake,Rainbow,Dio,Sabbath, Paice-Ashton & Lord, Screaming Lord Sutch,The Gillan Band,Elf,Trapeze,Micheal Schenker group and even the Gary Moore band. Almost as varying as the Fleetwood Mac line up... |

Lead Vocals : Dave Grohl Guitar : Jimi Hendrix Guitar : Rory Gallagher Bass : Geddy Lea Keyboards : Jon Lord Drums : John Bonham (simply the best) |

I can just picture the media frenzy now. Record companies fighting each other to sign us and paparazzi camping outside our houses.
